Abstract:

A device for use in conjunction with a slice lip adjusting mechanism for controlling the distribution of stock across the web of a paper machine to obtain a desired cross-machine profile of basis weight, moisture, caliper and the like. The device is used in conjunction with a slice body and a slice lip which abuts the body but is at least slightly movable relative thereto. An apertured adjusting arm engages the slice lip for fine adjustment of the lip position. Disengagement between the adjusting arm and the slice lip is prevented by a headed bolt which passes through the aperture in the adjusting arm and is received in threaded engagement in the slice body, in combination with a plug which is received in threaded engagement at the head of the bolt and a compressed spring which acts between the plug and the adjusting arm. A tube is provided with an internally threaded portion receiving the plug in threaded engagement at one end, with the opposite end of the tube being spaced from the adjusting arm by a small predetermined clearance thereby limiting the extent to which the adjusting arm can move away from engagement with the slice lip. Locking means are provided to lock the tube in an adjustable position relative to the plug.

Abstract:

An apparatus is disclosed for selectively moving the slice lip of a headbox of a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a housing secured to the headbox with the housing defining an elongate chamber. A control rod has a first and a second end with the first end being connected to the slice lip and the second end defining a longitudinally-threaded surface. A rotatable member is disposed within the chamber, the rotatable member defining an internally-threaded bore which cooperates with the threaded surface of the control rod such that when the member rotates within the chamber, the control rod is moved axially relative to the housing for selectively moving the slice lip. A motor is rigidly secured to the housing and is drivingly connected to the rotatable member for selectively rotating the rotatable member relative to the housing. The motor and the rotatable member are coaxial such that the apparatus is of compact configuration so that the space required by the apparatus is reduced and a larger number of control rods may be disposed in side-by-side relationship in a cross-machine direction such that the controllability of the slice lip is increased.

Abstract:

An additive and subtractive manufacturing system and method of manufacturing is provided. The system includes a print bed and both an additive machine and a subtractive machine. The additive machine will dispense material onto the print bed and the additive machine will be able to perform subtractive manufacturing on the material dispensed onto the print bed. The additive machine and subtractive machine will be mounted to actuators for moving the machines in three-dimensions within a working zone adjacent the print bed. The system may include placement machines for placing pre-made components in the product during the manufacturing process.
