A nonspecular reflective visual display having a plurality of display elements with a substantially thin conformal layer of encapsulation material placed on a surface of the display elements. The conformal layer of encapsulation material diffusely reflects light incident upon the display, thereby eliminating glare.

Abstract:

An apparatus for ink-jet printing on a recording medium is provided which includes the steps of jetting aqueous ink drops on paper in the form of an image. The aqueous ink used is a slow-drying (high-surface tension) ink which does not penetrate the paper/paper fibers for a relatively long time. Prior to penetration of the paper/paper fibers, the water in the droplet is quickly evaporated from the ink while still resident on the paper surface. The evaporation process is substantially completed prior to an additional liquid ink being jetted onto the same or adjoining location of the recording medium. The evaporation is rapid enough to prevent the resident ink from substantially migrating/wicking to any adjacent location or into the recording medium. Further the drying energy is transferred to the resident ink spots from the same direction as the printheads ensuring less energy requirement.

Abstract:

A method and mechanism for ensuring quality control in printed biological assays is provided. A multi-ejector system having a plurality of individual drop ejectors is loaded with a variety of biofluids. Biofluids include at least a carrier fluid, a biological material to be used in the testing, and markers, such as fluorescent dyes. Data regarding the biofluid loaded in each of the drop ejectors is stored along with an expected signature output of the biofluid. Particularly, the signature output represents signals from individual ones of the fluorescent markers included within the biofluid. Once a biological assay consisting of the biofluid drops has been printed, a scanner capable of detecting the markers scans the biological assay and obtains signature output signals for each of the drops of the biological assay. A comparing operation is undertaken to compare the obtained signature output through the scanning operation, with the expected signature output signals for the biofluid loaded in the corresponding drop ejector. The biological material itself may also be tagged with a marker to ensure its inclusion in the biofluid.

An improved method and apparatus for delivering medication to the lungs is described. Acoustic ink printing technology is modified to operate as an inhaler that generates tiny droplets near a patient's nose or mouth. The tiny droplets are easily carried by air currents into the patient's lungs. Abstract:

Methods and systems for writing and erasing electric writeable media are disclosed. An electric writeable medium may include a backplane electrode, a display layer including a plurality of elements and a top layer. The medium may further include a plurality of island electrodes. To enable writing to the medium, a stylus is charged to a positive voltage and the backplane electrode is grounded. The stylus is applied to the top layer and/or the island electrodes to deposit charge, which causes proximate elements to display a first color. If the top layer is a resistive layer, grounding the resistive layer and applying a positive voltage to the backplane electrode sufficient to change the displayed color of the elements erases the medium. If the top layer is a photoconductive layer, a light source is further required to enable the photoconductive layer to operate as an electrode when erasing the medium.
