The energy delivering apparatus may include a flexible elongated member and a distal expandable basket having at least one electrode for transferring energy to the airway wall and at least one temperature sensor for measuring temperature. The PID controller determines a new power set point base on an error between a preset temperature and the measured temperature. The algorithm can be P=P+G(αe+βe+γe) where α, β and γ are preset values and α is from 1 to 2; βis from −1 to −2; and γ is from −0. 5 to 0−5. In another variation, the controller is configured to shut down if various measured parameters are exceeded such as, for example, energy, impedance, temperature, temperature differences, activation time and combinations thereof.

  • Filed:
    May 10, 2006
  • Appl. No.:
    11/382680
  • Inventors:
Camran Nezhat - Woodside CA, US
Roger Stern - Cupertino CA, US
Joseph Eder - Los Altos CA, US
Peter Edelstein - Menlo Park CA, US
  • International Classification:
    A61B 18/14
  • US Classification:
    606050000
  • Abstract:
One method for performing procedures, such as vaginal hysterectomies, comprises engaging first and second energy transmitting elements against a lateral side of a uterus. The first and second energy transmitting elements are positioned against opposed surfaces of a tissue mass extending from and including a fallopian tube or round ligament to a tip of a cervix. Third and fourth energy transmitting elements are positioned against another lateral side of the uterus and against opposed surfaces of another tissue mass extending from and including another fallopian tube or round ligament to the tip of the cervix. Radio frequency or other high energy power is applied through the energy transmitting elements to the tissue masses. The power is applied for a time and in an amount sufficient to coagulate and seal the tissue masses within the energy transmitting elements. The coagulated tissue masses are then resected and the entire uterus removed.

The apparatus includes a catheter probe having a terminal tip portion and an electrode carried on the tip such that a portion of the tip electrode is exposed to ambient. A reference electrode is spaced along the tip from the first electrode for supplying a reference potential signal. An ablating electrode is located adjacent to but electrically insulated from both the tip and reference electrodes for providing electromagnetic energy to the tip. The electrodes are electrically connected to the proximal end of the catheter through individual conductors or wires that run through an insulated cable. An electronic filter is provided to permit the recording of MAPs during ablation without radiofrequency interference. The catheter may also include standard mapping and/or pacing electrodes.
  • Ultrasonic Marker For Physiologic Diagnosis And Method Of Using Same

    view source
  • US Patent:
    43735320, Feb 15, 1983
  • Filed:
    Jul 7, 1980
  • Appl. No.:
    6/166556
  • Inventors:
Bruce C. Hill - Palo Alto CA
Roger A. Stern - Palo Alto CA
  • Assignee:
Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation - Palo Alto CA
  • International Classification:
    A61B 1000
  • US Classification:
    128660
  • Abstract:
For non-invasive diagnosis of conditions subsequent to a medical operative procedure, at the time of operation a "target" is sutured to tissue. Later, by use of an ultrasonic imaging system or other diagnostic instrument, the location of the target can be accurately determined. Thereupon, non-invasive techniques may be used in the target area to determine changes in physiology subsequent to implanting the target. For example, a target consisting of a fused array of small stainless steel balls is sutured to a coronary artery bypass graft. Later, to determine if the bypass graft is patent, by ultrasonic methods the location of the target and hence the bypass graft is determined. Then, using a Doppler-effect flowmeter, flow through the bypass graft may be measured and compared with prior measurements. The marking technique is also believed to be useful in postoperative determination of tumor growth at the locus of said marker.
