Abstract:A novel cross-plied material is formed of portions of a ply of a ballistic-resistant structure composed of unidirectionally-oriented bundles of high strength filaments laminated between opposing thermoplastic films which portions are cross-plied with portions of a continuous ply of a similar ballistic-resistant structure with a plurality of yarns laterally spaced into a linear array corresponding to the width of the continuous ply along the ply direction. Substantially continuous coatings or deposits of a bonding or coupling agent on the yarns cause a plurality of substantially continuous bonding strips to be formed between the continuous ply and the portions of cross-ply, with the bonding strips being laid in a laterally spaced linear array corresponding to the yarns. The bonding strips couple the cross-ply portions with consecutive portions of the continuous ply, whereby the continuous ply and the cross-ply portions are adhered sufficiently to prevent their being pulled apart.

Abstract:A method and apparatus are provided for making a fabric from one or more reinforcing fibers. The apparatus comprises a non-planar form about which the one or more reinforcing fibers are wrapped. The apparatus further includes conveying apparatus, fiber dispensing apparatus, drive apparatus, and separating apparatus. The conveying apparatus includes at least one conveyor element traveling along the form and also about which the fibers are wrapped for moving the wrapped fibers along the form. The drive apparatus is coupled to the conveying apparatus for effecting movement of the at least one conveyor element. The fiber dispensing apparatus supports one or more fiber sources such that the one or more fiber sources are movable with the dispensing apparatus around the form thereby allowing the fibers from the one or more fiber sources to be wrapped about the form and the at least one conveyor element as the dispensing apparatus moves around the form. The separating apparatus is positioned at a separating station for separating the fabric from the one or more conveyor elements. A fabric formed by the method and apparatus is also disclosed.

Abstract:A process and apparatus for spreading fibers in a fibrous tow provides a fiber spreader for spreading a tow of fibers moving in a machine direction having a plurality of spaced pins, where the spacing between the pins is variable relative to the machine direction, and the position of the pins is variable relative to the machine direction. Variation of the spacing and position of the pins during motion of the pins contact with a tow moving generally in the machine direction provides a spread tow of lower, more uniform areal weight for further use in product applications. Variation in pin spacing and fiber spreading results from rotation of at least one pin relative to another after the pins are inserted into a tow. Alternate techniques for fiber spreading and additional features for stress relief of fibers during the fiber spreading operation are disclosed.
