Abstract:
A character generating system is provided for a photocomposition machine to display alpha/numeric symbols on a CRT for any language selected from a group of languages. The system includes a character generator memory for each symbol and control means which selects a predetermined set of memories for each language in a manner that symbols common to two or more languages are provided from the same character generator memory, whereby the total memory required for all symbols of the group of languages is minimized.

Abstract:
An improved photocomposition machine is provided including a keyboard and a cathode ray tube (CRT) which displays various function commands, such as font, point size, and line length and their selected values, in a function field area on the CRT screen. Changes in point size and font values made by the operator within a line appear on the screen with the type line characters in a sequence which they were entered. Upon completion of a type line, the last selected point size and font values appear in the function field area as the completed line is shifted to a predetermined location on the CRT screen, whereby the operator is provided with a visual record of the point size and font values for both current and previous lines.
A system for intermixing large and small size type in a photocomposer by coordinating speed of a disc font storage medium with the size of type to be set. The speed of the disc drive motor is controlled by pulses of power to the motor. A signal frequency which is used to produce the pulses simultaneously controls the speed of the disc driven motor and a counter which is allowed to count out only at specified times in relation to the matrix relative position and thereby inform a controller of the matrix position.
