Abstract:

A miniature x-ray source capable of producing broad spectrum x-ray emission over a wide range of x-ray energies. The miniature x-ray source comprises a compact vacuum tube assembly containing a cathode, an anode, a high voltage feedthru for delivering high voltage to the anode, a getter for maintaining high vacuum, a connection for an initial vacuum pump down and crimp-off, and a high voltage connection for attaching a compact high voltage cable to the high voltage feedthru. At least a portion of the vacuum tube wall is highly x-ray transparent and made, for example, from boron nitride. The compact size and potential for remote operation allows the x-ray source, for example, to be placed adjacent to a material sample undergoing analysis or in proximity to the region to be treated for medical applications.

Abstract:

A vacuum deposition process for depositing powdered phosphor on fiber optic face plates, such as the output fiber optic window of gated image intensifiers. The process involves resistive heating vacuum deposition of a powdered phosphor, such as Zn, CD, (S) to a thickness of 7900 Angstroms, for example, after which it is annealed which promotes a columnar growth and makes the phosphor efficient. The thus annealed phosphor can then be directly overcoated with aluminum of a thinner coating than over a powdered phosphor produced by prior known methods due to the smoother surface produced by this process.

Abstract:

A unique container closure is disclosed which includes a flat top surface, a vertical side wall, and a sloping intermediate wall interconnecting the top and the side wall at an angle to the vertical. Interiorly of the closure are depending, radially inwardly extending reinforcement ribs which are integrally connected to the top surface, the intermediate wall, and the side wall for stiffening purposes. An annular depending rib is also contained on the interior surface of the intermediate wall, and the inner surface of the side wall has a recess, an inwardly extending annular flange, and a further recess adapted to engage a corresponding lip on the container per se. In this fashion the depending flange of the intermediate wall and the internal rib of the side wall will firmly engage the top lip of the container per se, while the unique intermediate wall construction between the side wall and the top surface will prevent inadvertent dislodgment of the lid by coming into contact with the lid of an adjacent container.

Abstract:

An improved pilot valve construction for use in a fluid and mechanically actuated double diaphragm pump which includes a housing, first and second axially spaced fluid pressure chambers, first and second flexible diaphragms disposed in the pressure chambers and mechanically interconnected for simultaneous reciprocal movement and each defining a flexible wall of an adjacent pumping chamber and a pilot valve projecting axially into the pressure chambers and slidable axially in response to engagement by one of the diaphragms and wherein the pilot valve is provided with one or more axially extending grooves in its peripheral surface. The pilot valve may also be provided with a radially extending projection in its peripheral surface.

Abstract:

A double diaphragm pump includes a connecting shaft for interconnecting the opposed diaphragms mounted in the pump body for reciprocal movement relatively thereof and a pilot valve sleeve telescoped over the shaft and movable axially in response to movement of the connecting shaft and having a plurality of axially directed circumferentially disposed recesses thereon for fluid transfer through the pilot valve cavity. A spool valve assembly is also carried by the body in a cavity which is in selected fluid communication with a source of air pressure, the pilot valve, the atmosphere and the pressure chambers of the pump. The pilot valve sleeve also has at least one projecting annular rib which engages the usual O-rings of the cavity in which the connecting rods and pilot valve sleeve reciprocate for assisting movement past the O-rings in response to pressure from the spool valve.

Abstract:

A fluid-driven reciprocating pump includes a housing and a reciprocating assembly defining first and second working fluid chambers. The housing includes an inlet and an outlet for introduction and exhaustion of the working fluid. A valve member slidably moves against a valve surface between a first position, in which communication is established between the first working fluid chamber and either the power fluid inlet or outlet, and a second position in which communication is established between the second working fluid chamber and the same inlet or outlet. The reciprocating assembly includes a rod which moves in response to the introduction and exhaustion of the power fluid into and out of the first and second working chambers. A control valve actuator shifts the valve member between the first and second positions in response to the movement of the reciprocating rod and also urges the valve member toward the valve surface to form a fluid-tight union therebetween.
