Abstract:

A system for optically characterizing an acoustic beam generally includes an immersant, which is an immersion medium seeded with a plurality of seed particles that respond to illumination with fluorescence indicative of at least one parameter of the immersant such as flow or temperature. Optical transmitters illuminate the immersant slicewise, and optical receptors receive the fluorescence in order to generate a three-dimensional map of the parameter over time. A processor back-calculates one or more characteristics of an acoustic beam that results in the map. The processor initially generates a behavior model of an acoustic beam propagating in the immersant by utilizing initial guesses for the characteristics. The initial guess model is compared to the map, and an optimization routine is used to refine the initial guesses. The process repeats iteratively with refined guesses until the difference between the model and the map is minimized.

Abstract:

An illumination system for a particle image velocimetry system has an illumination source, a hollow tapered optical funnel arranged to receive illumination light from the illumination source, a hollow optical waveguide optically coupled to an output end of the hollow tapered optical funnel, and a beam shaping optical system optically coupled to an output end of the hollow optical waveguide. The illumination system is constructed to provide a light sheet to illuminate particles within a fluid under observation. A particle image velocimetry system has such an illumination system.

Abstract:

Apparatus is provided to serve as a phantom for evaluation of prosthetic valves and cardiac ultrasound procedures, wherein a controlled pulsatile flow of a blood-mimicking fluid is passed through a multi-chambered region into which are mounted mitral and aortic valves and adjustably positionable ultrasound transducers. A low friction, drive which involves very low levels of extraneous vibrational inputs, is provided with adjustment of both the volume flow rate of blood-mimicking fluid moved in each operational pulse with further control provided by relatively easily adjusted screws to selectively regulate the systolic and diastolic times of the pulsatile flow generated by a bellows arrangement. Windows made of silicone elastomer material presenting both tissue-equivalent impedance for ultrasound transmission and tissue-equivalent attenuation of the ultrasound are provided in controlled thickness to permit detailed observation of valvular flow parameters of interest, e. g. , flow velocity distributions observed in the transesophogeal and apical directions.

Abstract:

An aerodynamic spoiler mounted on the upper forward surface of the fuselage of an aircraft which is equipped to be refueled by another aircraft while in flight. The spoiler counteracts aerodynamic disturbances produced by the refueling boom and the resultant instabilities in pitch in the aircraft receiving fuel. Four species of the spoiler are disclosed and the device may be made retractable to eliminate drag when not in use.

Abstract:

An aerial refueling boom utilized in the transfer of fuel from a tanker airplane to a receiver airplane and more particularly, to the boom geometry or gimballing which comprises an axis fixed with respect to structure of the tanker airplane about which the boom rotates in elevation and an inclinable axis about which the boom rotates for lateral movement. The angle of inclination of the boom lateral motion pivot axis or azimuth axis varies with respect to the longitudinal axis of the airplane axis as the boom is changed in elevation angle. A pair of aerodynamic surfaces formed into a Vee and known as ruddevators are mounted towards the trailing end of the boom for flying the boom about these axes. The ruddevators are part of a control system which includes a pantographing cable system for automatically changing the angle-of-attack of the aerodynamic surfaces and for alleviating the air loads imposed by the receiver airplane when it is imparting the movement of the boom during the refueling engagement. The boom support system includes articulation which provides for combining a certain amount of boom rolling action with sideward movement of the boom and varies the ratio between the degree of roll motion vs.
