  • Appl. No.:
    11/696491
  • Inventors:
    R. Glynn Holt - Natick MA, US
Ronald A. Roy - Mansfield MA, US
  • Assignee:
Synergy Innovations, Inc. - Lebanon NH
  • International Classification:
    B41J 2/02
  • US Classification:
    347 73
  • Abstract:
A device, method and system for causing a controlled collapse of cavities formed within liquid droplets wherein a pressurized jet comprising a liquid and nanoparticle material and possibly fuel produces droplets from the breakup of the jet stream. The liquid droplets are irradiated with energy to produce and expand cavities formed within the droplets by irradiation of the nanoparticles contained within the droplets. The droplets are collided with a target to collapse the cavities within the droplets. The irradiating and colliding are timed to enhance implosion energy resulting from the cavities' collapse. The implosion energy and the fuel in the cavity may be used to activate and sustain a fusion reaction.

  • Assignee:
    Northeastern University - Boston MA
Trustees of Boston University - Boston MA
  • International Classification:
    G01B 9/02
  • US Classification:
    356502
  • Abstract:
A system and method of detecting acousto-photonic emissions in optically turbid media that provide increased levels of detection sensitivity. The detection system includes an ultrasonic transducer, a laser, a photo-detector for detecting ultrasound-modulated laser light, and circuitry for processing the detected signals for subsequent analysis. The ultrasonic transducer generates an ultrasonic wave that propagates within an optically turbid medium. The laser generates a coherent light beam, which is split to form signal and reference beams. The signal beam is sent through the turbid medium, where it is phase modulated by the ultrasound. The ultrasound-modulated signal beam is provided to a photo-refractive crystal for subsequent interference with the reference beam to convert the phase modulation to intensity modulation. The DC offset of the signal beam intensity provides a measure of the magnitude of the mean phase shift induced by the ultrasound on the multiply scattered optical field within the turbid medium.

  • Inventors:
    R. Glynn Holt - Natick MA, US

  • Assignee:
Synergy Innovations, Inc. - Lebanon NH
  • International Classification:

    347 72
  • Abstract:
A device, method and system for causing a controlled collapse of cavities formed within liquid droplets wherein a pressurized jet comprising a liquid and nanoparticle material produces droplets from the breakup of the jet stream. The liquid droplets may be irradiated with energy to produce and expand cavities formed within the droplets by irradiation of the nanoparticles contained within the droplets or alternatively, a volatile fluid with or without a metal nanoparticle may form the cavity. The droplets are collided with a target to collapse the cavities within the droplets. The irradiating (if provided) and colliding are timed to enhance implosion energy resulting from the cavities' collapse. The implosion energy and the fuel in the cavity may be used to activate and sustain a fusion reaction or from any other purposes.

  • Photonic Band Gap Materials And Method Of Preparation Thereof

    view source
  • US Patent:
    56518188, Jul 29, 1997
  • Filed:
    Jun 27, 1994
  • Appl. No.:
    8/266146
  • Inventors:
Joseph B. Milstein - Brighton MA
Ronald G. Roy - Tewksbury MA
  • International Classification:
    C30R 1700
  • US Classification:
    117 54
  • Abstract:
The invention concerns materials which exhibit photonic band gaps in the near infrared and visible regions of the optical spectrum and methods of preparation of such materials. The materials manufactured according to the invention are particularly suitable for use in the optical analog to semiconductor behavior, in which a photonic band gap material, or a plurality of such materials acting in concert, can be made to interact with and control light wave propagation in a manner analogous to the way that semiconductor materials can be made to interact with and control the flow of electrically charged particles, i. e. , electricity, in both analog and digital applications. According to the invention it is possible to fabricate a photonic band gap material by impregnating the pores or voids contained within the volume of a specially prepared reticulated mesh, which may be made of a material with a high melting temperature such as a metal, with liquid material which melts at a temperature lower than the melting temperature of the reticulated mesh and which solidifies upon cooling. The reticulated mesh is then dissolved by simple chemical action in a liquid bath, leaving behind a solid reticulated structure composed of the solidified liquid material. In particular, the liquid material may be caused to solidify into an ordered solid such as a single crystal by the imposition of either or both a thermal gradient or a seed single crystal of the same or a closely related material.
