Abstract:

The present invention provides a system, method and apparatus for controlling a gas-fired heater connected to a fuel source via a fuel source valve that includes one or more power sources, a temperature sensor, a pilotless igniter disposed within the gas-fired heater, a flame sensor disposed within the gas-fired heater and a controller electrically connected to the one or more power sources, the temperature sensor, the pilotless igniter, the flame sensor and the fuel source valve. The controller turns the pilotless igniter on for a first time period and opens the fuel source valve whenever the temperature sensor indicates that a temperature is less than or equal to a low temperature setting. The controller also closes the fuel source valve whenever the temperature sensor indicates that the temperature is greater than or equal to a high temperature setting or the flame sensor indicates that a flame has gone out.

Abstract:

Pilot assemblies comprising a fire path tubing and pilot tubing in fluid communication through a pilot nozzle for elevated flare stacks are disclosed. A plurality of flame segments is generated using a hot surface ignition element or a spark igniter in the fire path tubing and ignites fuel/air mixture flowing through the pilot tubing into a pilot nozzle to produce a reliable pilot flame. The pilot flame ignites the waste gases flowing out of the flare tip of elevated flare stacks. Methods for operating the pilot assemblies are also disclosed.

Sparkless igniters comprising a hot surface igniter assembly and a nozzle that produce a flame plume with diameter substantially similar to the diameter of the fire tube, and flame length less than the length of each leg of the U-shaped fire tube in heater treaters are disclosed. The disclosed igniters and methods are applicable to both vertical and horizontal heater treaters and improve the durability of fire tubes while reducing igniter fuel consumption by at least 30%.

Abstract:

Sparkless igniters for pilot services comprising hot surface igniter elements, and methods for operating these igniters without the use of flame rods or thermocouples. The electrical resistance of the hot surface igniter element is measured and used to control the operation of the igniters using a suitable burner management system. The measured electrical resistance may also be manipulated to yield a control parameter for use in the burner management system. The igniters are designed to prevent quenching of the hot surface elements by the fuel-air mixture. The igniters optionally permit easy swap out of hot surface igniter elements.
