  • Turbo Channel Estimation For Ofdm Systems

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7440507, Oct 21, 2008
  • Filed:
    Jul 26, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/190373
  • Inventors:
Titus Lo - Redmond WA, US
Ruifeng Wang - Redmond WA, US
  • Assignee:
AT&T Mobility II LLC - Atlanta GA
  • International Classification:
    H04L 27/28
  • US Classification:
    375260, 375267, 375285, 375347, 375348, 375349, 455 65, 455134, 4552262, 455296, 370208
  • Abstract:
A system and method for estimating a channel in a wireless receiver is disclosed. The method preferably applies to a communication system using the OFDM standard. The method comprises receiving a block of “n” transmitted symbols, the symbols including pilot symbols and “d” data symbols, estimating a channel using the pilot symbols to create a channel estimate, choosing a group of “m” strongest symbols from the “d” received symbols, compensating the “m” strongest symbols using the channel estimate to create a group of “m” compensated symbols, re-estimating the channel using the group of “m” compensated symbols and pilot symbols; and either (1) repeating the steps of choosing a group of “m” strongest symbols, compensating the group of “m” strongest symbols and re-estimating the channel, or (2) using a latest channel estimate to compensate all symbols within the block. The system comprises a wireless receiver having an estimator programmed, for example, using DSP or ASIC and imbedded into the wireless system design software for accomplishing the steps set forth according to the method.
  • Method And System For Multi-Carrier Packet Communication With Reduced Overhead

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7948944, May 24, 2011
  • Filed:
    Sep 28, 2006
  • Appl. No.:
    11/908257
  • Inventors:
Xiaodong Li - Kirkland WA, US
Haiming Huang - Bellevue WA, US
Titus Lo - Bellevue WA, US
Ruifeng Wang - Sammamish WA, US
  • Assignee:
    Neocific, Inc. - Bellevue WA
  • International Classification:
    H04W 4/00
  • US Classification:
    370330
  • Abstract:
A method and system for minimizing the control overhead in a multi-carrier wireless communication network that utilizes a time-frequency resource is disclosed. In some embodiments, one or more zones in the time-frequency resource are designated for particular applications, such as a zone dedicated for voice-over-IP (VoIP) applications. By grouping applications of a similar type together within a zone, a reduction in the number of bits necessary for mapping a packet stream to a portion of the time-frequency resource can be achieved. In some embodiments, modular coding schemes associated with the packet streams may be selected that further reduce the amount of necessary control information. In some embodiments, packets may be classified for transmission in accordance with application type, QoS parameters, and other properties. In some embodiments, improved control messages may be constructed to facilitate the control process and minimize associated overhead.
