Abstract:

Control of a robotic mechanism comprising both active and passive joints is accomplished, where the motion of one or more of the passive joints is constrained by one or more constraints imposed on the mechanism by the environment, the mechanical construction of the mechanism, or the nature of the task such as a surgical robot holding a surgical instrument inserted into a patient through a natural or man-made orifice. The control incrementally moves the mechanism in a series of successive movements from its actual position to its desired or target position. The effect of moving each individual joint of the mechanism is characterized by Cartesian displacement of the target and a Jacobian is constructed mapping between infinitesimal joint displacements of the target to be extended to include both passive and active joints. Thus, hybrid robots containing both active and passive joints can be effectively controlled.

Abstract:

A method for performing radiological-image-guided percutaneous surgery with a system which includes a radiological image generating device for generating an image of a target anatomy of a patient, and a needle insertion mechanism disposed adjacent the image generating device and having a needle adapted to be inserted into the patient. The method includes the steps of: determining a needle trajectory of the needle by positioning the image generating device for aligning, in the image generated by the image generating device, a desired skin insertion site of the patient with a target region of the target anatomy; locking the needle in a direction of the needle trajectory; and repositioning the image generating device to obtain a lateral view of the needle trajectory for viewing an insertion depth and path of the needle during its insertion into the patient. Moreover, a motion transmission mechanism includes an output shaft and an output shaft driver which has two rotational components having respective contact faces between which the output shaft is pressed for frictional engagement therewith. The frictional engagement creates a force between the output shaft and the rotational components which is parallel to the rotational axis of the rotational components for allowing the rotational components to impart a translational motion to the output shaft by virtue of their rotational motion.

Abstract:

The system and method includes a manipulator for manipulating a surgical instrument relative to a patients body and, a position sensor for sensing the position of the surgical instrument relative to the patients body. The manipulator can be manually or computer actuated and can have brakes to limit movement. In a preferred embodiment, orthogonal only motion between members of the manipulator is provided. The position sensor includes beacons connected to the patient and manipulator or surgical instrument and, a three dimensional beacon sensor adapted to sense the location and position of the beacons. Redundant joint sensors on the manipulator may also be provided. The system and method uses a computer to actively interact with the surgeon and can use various different input and output devices and modes.

Abstract:

A dispenser for dispensing rolled materials wherein the dispenser includes a housing adapted to support a roll of material. A cover is attached to the housing, the cover being pivotable upwardly to an open position and pivotable downwardly to a closed position. A first roller may be attached to the housing and a second roller may be attached to the cover. A dispensing opening is formed between the housing and the cover when the cover is in its closed position, so that the leading portion of a roll of material that is placed within the housing may extend over the first roller. When the cover is moved to its closed position, the leading portion is captured in the nip formed between the first roller and the second roller, thus eliminating the need to feed the leading portion of the rolled material through the nip formed by the rollers.

Featured is a system to determine the three-dimensional position and orientation of an effector (a needle, probe, or other medical instrument) relative to a subject using cross-sectional images (e. g. from a CT or MRI scanner). Also provided is a method for image guided effector placement that requires no immobilization of the patient or fiducial implantation. Abstract:

Image processing is used to determine information about the position of a designated object, particularly where the object is difficult to view or locate. In particular, use in endoscopic surgery can determine positional information about an anatomical feature within a patient's body. The positional information is then used to position or reposition a surgical instrument in relation to the designated object. An instrument placed in relation to the designated object is capable of sending information about the object to a computer. Image processing generates images and determines positional information, which can be used as input to robotic devices or rendered to a human user.

A robotic 5D ultrasound system and method, for use in a computer integrated surgical system, wherein 3D ultrasonic image data is integrated over time with strain (i. e. , elasticity) image data. By integrating the ultrasound image data and the strain image data, the present invention is capable of accurately identifying a target tissue in surrounding tissue; segmenting, monitoring and tracking the target tissue during the surgical procedure; and facilitating proper planning and execution of the surgical procedure, even where the surgical environment is noisy and the target tissue is isoechoic.
