The Charlotte, North Carolina-based Duke says the spill occurred during a fuel transfer and lasted about 10 to 15 minutes. Duke spokeswoman Sally Thelen said that the company was still determining the cause of the spill.
Duke crews will be leaving the region, from Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., to supplement contractor crews that were sent to the area Tuesday, said Sally Thelen, Duke corporate communications. Crews will head to Greensboro, N.C., and then will be dispatched to the hardest hit areas.
A spokeswoman for Duke Energy, Sally Thelen said all of the companys systems have been performing without problems. The company plans maintenance on its lines in non-peak months to keep the system operating without interruption during the summer and winter months.
