  • Dipole Ring Array Antenna For Circularly Polarized Pattern

    view source
  • US Patent:
    45557080, Nov 26, 1985
  • Filed:
    Jan 10, 1984
  • Appl. No.:
    6/569642
  • Inventors:
Douglas K. Waineo - Placentia CA
Sam S. Wong - Yorba Linda CA
  • Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air
    Force - Washington DC
  • International Classification:
    H01Q 2120
    H01Q 128
  • US Classification:
    343799
  • Abstract:
A NAVSTAR satellite has a navigation antenna array beamed toward the earth. A communications antenna array for communicating with other satellites requires a pattern null near the axis and high gain to the sides with minimum losses. This is achieved with a dipole ring array comprising eight elements surrounding the navigation array. The ring has a diameter of 1. 1 wavelength, and is fed with equal amplitudes and a third mode phase progression, which produces good circular polarization in the far field. For a different sized dipole ring, there will still be an optimum phase distribution which will give good circularly polarized patterns.
  • Durable, Lightweight, Radar Lens Antenna

    view source
  • US Patent:
    56753497, Oct 7, 1997
  • Filed:
    Feb 12, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/599914
  • Inventors:
Sam H. Wong - Yorba Linda CA
  • Assignee:
Boeing North American, Inc. - Seal Beach CA
  • International Classification:
    H01Q 1502
  • US Classification:
    343910
  • Abstract:
A radar lens 14 is made from a conventional Fresnel lens 10, but replaces the conventional curved surface 32 with a stepped approximation thereto 22, 24, 26, preferably of three steps. The thickness of the stepped lens 14, at each step, is a half-wavelength or a multiple half-wavelength of the radar operating frequency in the medium of the lens 14. The half-wavelength or multiple half-wavelength separation of the steps 22, 24, 26 causes reflections from the front 16 and rear 18 surfaces to cancel, thereby minimizing the (undesirable) standing wave between the lens 14 and the feed horn or feed horns 46, 48, 50. This avoids the necessity of reducing the standing wave by presenting the curved or stepped side 18 forward. The planar side 16 of the lens 14 (unlike the stepped side 18) doesn't need to be protected from road debris. The lens 14 can therefore be molded as an integral unit of a radome, desirable in the automotive setting.

  • Bi-Directional Spatial Power Combiner Grid Amplifier

    view source
  • US Patent:
    54812232, Jan 2, 1996
  • Filed:
    Sep 13, 1994
  • Appl. No.:
    8/305245
  • Inventors:
Sam H. Wong - Yorba Linda CA
  • Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - Seal Beach CA
  • International Classification:
    H03F 368
  • US Classification:
    330124R
  • Abstract:
A bi-directional spatial power combiner grid amplifier has an array of parasitic elements between the lens and the amplifier. The elements have different impedances to radiation of a first polarization (incident radiation) and of a second polarization which is orthogonal to the first (amplified radiation), thereby providing impedance matching to both the input and the output of the grid amplifier. The elements preferably are separated slots or dipoles (some in each direction of polarization), crossed slots or dipoles, or micropatches.

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6005512, Dec 21, 1999
  • Filed:
    Jun 16, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    9/098409
  • Inventors:
Sam H. Wong - Yorba Linda CA
  • Assignee:
Boeing North American, Inc. - Seal Beach CA
  • International Classification:
    G01S 1344
  • US Classification:
    342 80
  • Abstract:
A radar system and method for obtaining low sum and difference side lobe patterns from a phased array antenna comprising radiators distributed amongst four quadrants A, B, C, and D. The quadrants are arranged in a clockwise order of A, B, D, and C. Each quadrant is further divided into an inner portion and an outer portion. The monopulse sum pattern is determined by adding signals received by radiators in the A quadrant, B quadrant, C quadrant, and D quadrant. The elevation difference pattern is determined by subtracting a CD sum consisting of signals received by radiators in the C outer portion and the D outer portion from an AB sum consisting of signals received by radiators in the A outer portion and the B outer portion. The azimuth difference pattern is determined by subtracting a BD sum consisting of signals received by radiators in the B outer portion and the D outer portion from an AC sum consisting of signals received by radiators in the A outer portion and the C outer portion.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assisted Cryosurgery

  • US Patent:
    54337178, Jul 18, 1995
  • Filed:
    Mar 23, 1993
  • Appl. No.:
    8/035455
  • Inventors:
    Boris Rubinsky - Albany CA
    John Gilbert - Berkeley CA
    Sam Wong - Emeryville CA
Mark Roos - San Francisco CA
    Grant Pease - Oakland CA
  • Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
  • International Classification:
    A61B 1736
  • US Classification:
    606 20
  • Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assisted cryosurgery. Optimal probe placements and cooling parameters are calculated prior to cryosurgery using MRI data. A MRI compatible cryoprobe and a stereotactic probe positioning device are provided. The resolution of MR images is enhanced by mounting a radio frequency MR coil on the intracorporeal end of a cryoprobe. During cryosurgery the temperature distribution in the frozen region is solved by determining the boundary of the frozen region and solving the heat equation for the known boundary conditions. During cryosurgery the temperature distribution in the unfrozen region is determined by T1 measurements. The process of freezing is controled using information from the solution of the energy equation in the frozen region and temperature measurements in the unfrozen region. After cryosurgery the extent of the tissue damage may be ascertained using phosphorus-31 and/or sodium-23 spectroscopy with a special coil set on the cryosurgical probe.

  • High Efficiency Bi-Directional Spatial Power Combiner Amplifier

    view source
  • US Patent:
    52143945, May 25, 1993
  • Filed:
    Apr 15, 1991
  • Appl. No.:
    7/685104
  • Inventors:
Sam H. Wong - Yorba Linda CA
  • Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - Seal Beach CA
  • International Classification:
    H03F 36
    H01Q 2300
  • US Classification:
    330286
  • Abstract:
The present invention is a high efficiency bi-directional spatial power combiner for extremely high frequency signals. In one embodiment, orthogonally polarized electro-magnetic waves are used to isolate signals going into and out of a planar array of amplifiers. A dual mode horn transmits vertically polarized fields to a MMIC planar array of amplifiers. Vertically polarized array elements receive the signals, amplify them, and retransmit back to the horn using horizontally polarized array elements. An ortho-mode transducer on the horn provides isolation for the two polarized signals. The backside of the array can be used for a heat sink, and to provide access for DC biasing of the array elements. In a second embodiment, monolithic grid oscillators are used in lieu of power amplifiers with orthogonal polarization array elements. The input signal and the output signal are of the same polarization.
