  • Appl. No.:
    10/085981
  • Inventors:
Samir Narendra Mehta - Renton WA, US

    H04L 1/00
    H04L 9/00
    H04L 9/28
    H04K 1/00
  • US Classification:
    370352, 370259, 380 28
  • Abstract:
Computer- and network-based methods and systems for transmission-based billing are provided. Example embodiments provide a Packet-Based Billing System (“PBBS”), which enables application providers, such as carriers and content providers, to bill subscribers for the use of content on mobile subscriber devices, such as wireless devices, on a per-application, per-user basis based upon the extent of the usage. Embodiments of the present invention can also be used to bill subscribers for the use of content on a per-application, per-user basis for wired subscriber devices as well, using the same techniques. In operation, the PBBS provides modified content by inserting billing and tracking code into content returned to a requesting device. The modified content, when executed, tracks the amount of data sent and received between the content and a network and posts the accumulated data to a proxy/billing server according to business rules for an interval/frequency to post such data. The proxy/billing server stores the raw billing data and an accounting program retrieves the billing data to generate customer (call) data records.

  • International Classification:
    G06F 15/16
  • US Classification:
    709206
  • Abstract:
Instant messaging, also known as chat, is integrated with electronic mail in a user interface that provides for conversion of messages between electronic mail (email) and instant messaging. A user interface is provided for allowing a user who is composing an email message to convert the message to a chat message. The chat message will include any content that was present in the electronic mail message, and the user can continue to compose the chat message, and then send it to a chat address determined automatically from the email address of the original email message. Notifications are provided that indicate when chat users have logged on to or logged off from the chat service. These notifications assist a user composing a message to select the most appropriate communication method based upon the current online presence of the intended recipient. A user interface for converting messages in the opposite direction, from chat to email, is also provided.

The control unit () includes an indicator () that provides indicia of the currently selected mode or profile. Examples of indicators include multicolored lights and display devices. Where multicolored lights are used as the indicator (), actuation of the profile selector () causes the indicator () to change from a first color to a second color.
  • Method And System For Maintaining And Distributing Wireless Applications

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20020131404, Sep 19, 2002
  • Filed:
    Nov 28, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/997402
  • Inventors:
Samir Mehta - Renton WA, US
Mazin Ramadan - Seattle WA, US
Zeyad Ramadan - Seattle WA, US
  • Assignee:
    4thpass Inc. - Seattle WA
  • International Classification:
    H04L012/28
  • US Classification:
    370/352000, 370/351000
  • Abstract:
Computer- and network-based methods and systems for maintaining and provisioning wireless applications are provided. Example embodiments provide a Mobile Application System (MAS), which is a collection of interoperating server components that work individually and together in a secure fashion to provide applications and resources to mobile subscriber devices, such as wireless devices. Embodiments of the present invention can also be used to deploy applications and resources for wired subscriber devices. Application, resources, and other content is provisioned and verified by the MAS for authorized access by the subscriber, compatibility with a requesting subscriber device, and the security and billing policies of the carrier and system administrators of the MAS. In this manner, applications, resources, and other content can be downloaded to devices, such as wireless devices, with greater assurance of their ability to successfully execute. In one embodiment, content is provisioned by one or more of the steps of inspecting the content for malicious or banned code, optimizing the content for smaller size and greater speed, instrumentation of code that implements security, billing, and other carrier policies, and packaging of code for the intended subscriber device. Additional security is provided through application filters that are used to prevent applications that contain designated API from being downloaded to a subscriber's device. In one embodiment, the MAS includes a Protocol Manager, Provisioning Manager, Cache, Deployment Manager, Billing Manager, Logging Manager, Administrator, and Heartbeat Monitor, which interoperate to provide the provisioning functions.
  • Method And System For Two-Way Initiated Data Communication With Wireless Devices

  • US Patent:
    20030028671, Feb 6, 2003

  • International Classification:
    G06F015/16
  • US Classification:
    709/245000, 709/230000
  • Abstract:
Methods and systems for providing two-way initiated, bi-directional communication with wireless devices using connection-based or connection-less protocols, such as, for example, TCP/IP and UDP/IP, are provided. Example embodiments provide an Address Management Proxy System (“AMPS”), which enables devices and systems connected to a public internet, such as the Internet, to initiate communication with and to send data to wireless devices connected to a private wireless network, without exposing the non-routable private addresses of these wireless devices. The AMPS allocates a public (routable) network address for temporarily use by a requesting device on a public network to communicate with a wireless device on a wireless network. In one embodiment, a pool of public addresses, for example, public IP addresses, is maintained by the AMPS and allocated dynamically to wireless network devices as required. In one embodiment, the AMPS comprises one or more modified DNS/API servers, one or more Address Proxy/Routers, an Address Management Data Server, one or more data repositories, and optionally a load balancer. The AMPS DNS'/API server receives a request from a device on a public network for a particular wireless device, and returns an appropriate temporary public address, which is internally mapped to the private address of the wireless device. The public address is then usable by the device on the public network to send data to the wireless device.

Samir Mehta - Sammamish WA, US
  • Assignee:
    Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
  • International Classification:
    G06F 7/00
  • US Classification:
    370328000, 370401000
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus provides an open services gateway initiative (OSGi) bundle over the air to a wireless mobile device by obtaining data representing an OSGi bundle in the form of a JAVA archive (JAR) file (), such as from a trusted authority, or any other suitable source, and generates, for sending to the wireless mobile device, a MIDlet wrapped OSGi bundle () that contains data representing a MIDP JAR file () containing the OSGi bundle () and a corresponding MIDlet () operative to invoke an OSGi bundle provisioning application interface (API) () on the wireless mobile device to install said bundle. The method may be carried out for example by a network element, or any other suitable element or elements. In one example, a standard MIDP server sends the MIDlet wrapped OSGi bundle to the wireless mobile device since it is in a suitable MIDP format although it contains an OSGi bundle.

  • US Patent:
    20080222256, Sep 11, 2008
  • Filed:
    Mar 8, 2007
  • Appl. No.:
    11/716121
  • Inventors:
Greg A. Rosenberg - San Mateo CA, US

Samir B. Mehta - San Francisco CA, US
  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/27
  • US Classification:
    709206
  • Abstract:
Instant messaging, also known as chat, is integrated with electronic mail in a user interface that provides for automatic completion of recipient names or addresses, such as email addresses or chat addresses, as a user types characters of the name or address when addressing a message. The automatic completion feature displays a list of matches, which are names or addresses in, for example, the user's online contact list, that match the characters the user types. The matches list may contain names or addresses for multiple different communication methods. The user may then select one of the names or addresses to compose a message to be sent to the selected name or address. A user interface is then provided for composing a message to be sent to the selected name or address using the communication protocol associated with the selected name or address.
