Oakland County jury convicts 75-year-old woman of murdering grandson
After deliberations spread over two days, an Oakland County Circuit Court jury found Sandra Layne mother of five and a retired schoolteacher guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Jonathan Hoffman, 17.
n the months leading up to the May 18 killing, Jonathan Hoffman was in trouble hospitalized after overdosing on drugs and on probation for drug possession. Sandra Laynes supporters said his parents failed to take responsibility for him and left a vulnerable elderly woman to finish raising him.As she was led from the courtroom in shackles, her family members called out, We love you! Fred Layne, married to Sandra Layne for 30 years, wept as the verdict was read and left without talking to reporters.
He said his son and Sandra Layne were close, and the woman made "little bubby potatoes and brisket" for Jonathan Hoffman, her favorite grandchild. But Michael Hoffman also called her meddlesome and controlling.
Prosecutor Paul Walton said during his closing argument Monday that jurors should convict Sandra Layne of premeditated murder in the killing last May of her grandson, 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman. Jurors could convict her of a lesser charge, such as manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter.
