Abstract:

The invention reflects a recognition that prior art templates for colloidal crystal formation do not provide the expected level of three-dimensional periodicity, and further provides a process using an improved template, by which extremely high-quality colloidal crystals are able to be formed. Specifically, the colloidal template of the invention is designed such that the colloidal particles are induced to settle into the desired locations, unlike in prior art templates, thereby settling in an ordered manner.

Abstract:

A photorecording medium contains a polymeric matrix, typically cross-linked to provide a desired level of physical stability, and a photoimageable system containing a photoactive monomer. Unlike previous polymer media, which tend to contain a substantially homogeneous dispersion of photoimageable system and matrix polymer, the matrix and photoimageable system of the invention are phase separated, yet still exhibit low light scattering such that useful holographic properties are possible.

An apparatus, including an optical ring resonator having a waveguide ring with substantially straight waveguide segments and bent waveguide segments. The bent waveguide segments are optically coupled to the substantially straight waveguide segments and have optical cores with substantially smaller cross-sectional areas than the substantially straight waveguide segments. The bent waveguide segments change a propagation direction of received light by more than of a right angle.

Abstract:

The present invention provides an optical waveguide modulator. In one embodiment, the optical waveguide modulator includes a semiconductor planar optical waveguide core and doped semiconductor connecting paths located adjacent opposite sides of the core and capable of applying a voltage across the core. The optical waveguide core and connecting paths form a structure having back-to-back PN semiconductor junctions. In another embodiment, the optical waveguide modulator includes a semiconductor optical waveguide core including a ridge portion wherein the ridge portion has at least one PN semiconductor junction located therein. The optical waveguide modulator also includes one or more doped semiconductor connecting paths located laterally adjacent the ridge portion and capable of applying a voltage to the ridge portion.

Various embodiments provide an apparatus and a method for operating the apparatus. The apparatus, in one embodiment, may include an optical waveguide located over a substrate, the optical waveguide having a first segment and a second segment. The apparatus may further include a single heating element configured to heat both the first segment and the second segment, wherein a light propagation direction at a point in the second segment differs by at least 90 degrees with respect to a light propagation direction at the point in the first segment.
