Us Patents

  • Coating For Foams And Plastics

    view source
  • US Patent:
    52567168, Oct 26, 1993
  • Filed:
    Aug 20, 1990
  • Appl. No.:
    7/569437
  • Inventors:
Scott Haasl - Coon Rapids MN
Mark Kenow - Circle Pines MN
  • Assignee:
PDI, Inc. - Circle Pines MN
  • International Classification:
    C08L 9106
  • US Classification:
    524279
  • Abstract:
A coating formulation for secure bonding attachment to surfaces of resilient or flexible articles, including plastic foam articles and comprising a highly adherent and coherent water-based film forming mixture for coating the surface of flexible foam articles. The working solution of the coating preferably has a formulation containing: Component Acrylic emulsion; Plasticizer; Coalescing agent; Polyacrylate thickener/rheology modifier; Defoamer; Surfactant; Ammonium hydroxide; and Water. The working solution is applied to the surfaces of the article being treated and the water solvent which is present evaporates at a significantly rapid rate in the ambient to form a thick coating having a substantially dry outer surface. The film remains securely bonded to the article even though flexed and otherwise roughly treated.
  • Vinyl Based Coatings

  • US Patent:
    51926083, Mar 9, 1993
  • Filed:
    Oct 24, 1991
  • Appl. No.:
    7/781861
  • Inventors:
Scott Haasl - Coon Rapids MN
Mark Kenow - Circle Pines MN
  • Assignee:
PDI, Inc. - Circle Pines MN
  • International Classification:
    B32B 2700
    B32B 2722
    B32B 2730
  • US Classification:
    4283197
  • Abstract:
An improved composite coating system for coating foam resin articles, including a formulation for a base coat together with a formulation for a top coat which bonds while to the surface of the base coat to form the composite. The base coat formulation is a water-based vinyl resin together with a slow evaporating coalescent and plasticizer. The top coat utilizes a solvent-based vinyl resin together with aromatic and aliphatic solvents and plasticizers. Erucic acid base monoamides are utilized for achieving desirable slip properties in the finished top coating. In order to achieve the desirable properties of the composite coatings, the latex resin-based materials are selected from those having a low glass transition temperature such as between -20. degree. C. and about 20. degree. C.
  • Elastomeric Coatings Containing Glass Bubbles

  • US Patent:
    47451394, May 17, 1988
  • Filed:
    Feb 9, 1987
  • Appl. No.:
    7/012339
  • Inventors:
Robert J. Haasl - Roseville MN
Thomas M. Miller - Lakeland MN
Scott R. Haasl - Roseville MN
  • Assignee:
PDI, Inc. - St. Paul MN
  • International Classification:
    C08J 514
    C08J 932
    C08L 5300
  • US Classification:
    523149
  • Abstract:
A formulation for surface coating applications, particularly surfaces which are in frequent contact with water and remain water-wet, and/or surfaces of elastomeric and plastic foams, especially foams fabricated from polyethylene and polyurethane resins. The formulation includes a vehicle consisting primarily of a block polymer of styrene/ethylene/butylene/styrene and methylmethacrylate copolymer or related block polymer with lesser degrees of ethylenic unsaturation together with a rubber tackifier, with fillers being provided including particulate colloidal or powdered silicon dioxide, and glass microspheres having an average size of less than about 70 microns. The formulation is such that it is adaptable to be applied by either air pressure spray systems or aerosol packaging techniques.
