Abstract:

A method of characterizing formation fluid present in a subsurface earth formation during drilling using methods for correcting the measured concentrations of gas components in drilling mud. Gas trap values for the gas components of interest, light hydrocarbons, are measured during mud logging and are corrected using relative response factors, determined from laboratory fluid analysis values and relative extraction efficiency values. The relative response factors for each gas component of interest can be used for correcting additional gas trap values measured in the same well or for correcting gas trap values measured in surrounding wells utilizing a similar drilling fluid. The corrected gas trap values for each of the gas components of interest can be utilized to calculate gas/oil ratios for characterizing the formation fluid from the volume of drilling mud.

A system and method for determining fluid distribution in subterranean reservoirs including determining a water saturation in macroporosity from the capillary pressure data representative of the macroporosity using a saturation height function, correcting capillary pressure data representative of microporosity to have an entry pore value equivalent to a pore size defining the microporosity, determining a water saturation in the microporosity from the corrected capillary pressure data representative of the microporosity, and using the macroporosity water saturation and the microporosity water saturation to estimate fluid distribution within the subterranean reservoir. The system and method may also include the estimation of hydrocarbon reserves.

Abstract:

An improved gas trap for mud logging is vertically mounted such that its lower end is constantly beneath the surface of mud flowing in a tank. The mud is drawn into the housing where it is agitated to release the entrained gases which are drawn off for measurement. The spent mud is returned to the tank through a mud exit port and related pipe to a point below the level of the mud and remote from the mud intake to the gas trap. This gas trap is insensitive to mud level changes and is relatively free of maintenance requirements.

Abstract:

Methods and apparatus for improving the quantitative measurement and detection of gas entrapped in drilling fluid during a drilling operation are disclosed. A sealed gas sampler is provided for agitating the mud to evolve gas samples. A known quantity of a standard gas is injected into the evolved gas stream. By monitoring the quantitative amount of the standard gas measured, the samples of evolved gas may be corrected for various error sources such as gas saturation of the sample stream.

A method is described for quantitative pay summaries from mud logs, real-time fluid typing, and to minimize logging expense in high-angle or horizontal wells. The method may include receiving at least one mud log; selecting extraction system type, operating, and drilling parameters for the at least one mud log; determining hydrocarbon parameters such as methane (C1) extraction efficiency, trap response factor (TRF), and relative responses for ethane-pentane (C2-C5); correcting gas-in-mud volume to an earth surface to generate a corrected C1-C5; calculating a gas-to-oil ratio (GOR) from the corrected C1-C5; calculating a reservoir gas volume from the gas-in-mud volume to an earth surface and the GOR; determining pay cutoffs; and generating least one pay summary. The method may be executed by a computer system.

In some examples, a method for converged system compliance checking can include identifying a converged system compliance checking field for hardware in a converged system. The compliance checking field can, for example, be based on the purpose of the hardware. The method can further include identifying baseline compliance data for the compliance checking field, identifying actual compliance data for the compliance checking field by testing the hardware, comparing the actual compliance data to the baseline compliance data, and determining whether the hardware is in compliance with the converged system based on the comparison between the actual compliance data and the baseline compliance data.

Abstract:

A method of detecting changes in return drilling fluid flow during drilling operations includes injecting at least one tracer gas at a measured rate into a return drilling fluid. A first sample of gases are extracted from the return drilling fluid at a location downstream of injection of the at least one tracer gas. A first concentration of the tracer gas in the first sample of gases is measured. A second sample of gases is extracted from the return drilling fluid at the location. A second concentration of the tracer gas in the second sample is measured. Changes in measured concentration of the tracer gas from the first and second samples are determined. The method includes using the change in measured concentration to infer a change in the flow rate.
