Abstract:
A fuel injector nozzle includes a nozzle body and a poppet disposed in the body for reciprocating movement. The body has an internal bore surrounding the poppet. The internal bore tapers in a constant angle of taper from a front seating region to a fuel reservoir region. The poppet has a corresponding surface which diverges slightly from the bore. The surfaces of the bore and poppet form flow control surfaces which terminate in a sharp-edged orifice at the front face of the nozzle. When the poppet is displaced to an open or flow position, fuel is accelerated to the orifice and atomized into a combustion chamber. The poppet surface being formed so as to properly direct fuel after the poppet surface is machined.

Abstract:
A technique is provided for controlling fluid flow characteristics in a nozzle assembly. An outwardly opening poppet is movably disposed in an axial conduit to control fluid flow through a forward portion of the axial conduit. A fluid conduit is coupled to the forward portion at an angle configured to provide a desired degree of fluid swirl through the forward portion. The outwardly opening nozzle assembly produces a spray having geometrical characteristics correlated to the desired degree of fluid swirl.
Method And Apparatus For Regulating Gas Entrainment In A Fuel Injection Spray Of An Internal Combustion Engine
A technique is provided for regulating gas entrainment into a fuel spray in a fuel-injected engine. The fuel spray issues from a nozzle positioned in a gas entrainment shrouding recess, such as in the cylinder head. The depth and elevational profile of the recess are selected to provide a desired degree of gas entrainment. By reducing gas entrainment, a desired spray shape may be established or maintained, such as a hollow cone. More gas entrainment may be provided by altering the recess geometry, and that of the combustion chamber surrounding the recess, to modify the spray or the spray distribution, such as to partially or fully fill a spray cone.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus to operate a spray-guided spark-ignition direct fuel injection internal combustion engine are provided. The invention comprises injecting a first quantity of fuel during a combustion cycle. Spark ignition is initiated, and, injection of a second quantity of fuel is controlled effective to propagate a flame kernel generated by the spark ignition, after the initiation of the spark ignition during the combustion cycle.

Abstract:
A method and article of manufacture are provided to operate a spray-guided, spark-ignition, direct fuel injection engine, including injecting a first fuel pulse during a combustion cycle, and initiating spark ignition by energizing a spark igniter. A second fuel pulse is injected during the combustion cycle effective to form an ignitable fuel-air mixture proximal to the spark igniter during a period in time whereat the spark igniter is energized. A preferred elapsed time between an end of the first fuel pulse and start of the spark ignition is determined based upon engine load.
Large Volume Flow-Homogenizing Fuel Injection Nozzle And System And Method Incorporating Same
A technique is provided for homogenizing fluid flow in an outwardly opening nozzle assembly. A cavity is provided in a fluid flow passage adjacent a spray exit of an outwardly opening poppet to dampen fluid flow variances prior to spray formation at the spray exit. Accordingly, the spray formed at the spray exit has a substantially uniform distribution of fluid droplets.
Two-Piece Flow-Homogenizing Fuel Injection Nozzle And System And Method Incorporating Same
A technique is provided for homogenizing fluid flow in a nozzle assembly, which has an outwardly opening poppet disposed in a conduit. A fluid passage is provided independently from the conduit to supply fluid to a forward portion of the conduit adjacent a spray formation exit. The fluid passage has a desired geometry configured to facilitate fluid flow homogenization through the nozzle assembly. Accordingly, the spray produced at the spray formation exit has a substantially uniform distribution of fluid droplets.
