Abstract:

Systems and methods for sorting a plurality of recyclable items in a single-stream materials recovery facility (SSMRF) are provided. In some embodiments, a system includes an infeed conveying system, a fiber transfer conveyor, a container transfer conveyor, and a glass sorting and conveying system. The system further includes a controller configured to obtain total weight and volume of recyclable items at the infeed conveying system. The controller estimates a percent weight of fiber items and a percent weight of non-fiber items relative to the total weight. Based on the estimates, the controller controls speed of at least one of the infeed conveying system, the fiber transfer conveyor, the container transfer conveyor, and the glass sorting and conveying system.

Abstract:

Methods of creating a batch of recycled glass from mixed color glass cullet. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving at a glass plant a weight and color composition percentage of a first batch of mixed color cullet. The glass plant also receives a weight and color composition percentage of a second batch of mixed color cullet. The weight and color composition percentage of the first batch and the second batch are combined to generate a combined weight and composition percentage. The combined weight and composition are percentage are used to generate, automatically at a glass plant, a formulation to produce glass of a desired color.

A system and methods for encouraging a user to continue recycling behavior through various rewards systems and economic benefits, each of which contribute to the overall efficiency and sustainability of a recycling program. The system includes both hardware and software components that are adapted to receive, quantify and assess the quality of recyclable goods. Further, a method includes cooperating with the system to provide users with economic incentives to increase both the quantity and the quality for recycling. Further still, a method includes steps of receiving recyclables from a recyclables container associated with a user, electronically capturing data relating to individual recycled items, and providing a benefit to the user associated with the recyclables container in response to both the quantity and the quality of the recyclables received.
