Abstract:
An optical fiber cable is provided for undersea applications that include a hollow buffers tube with at least one optical fiber disposed therein. The buffer tube is formed from a plastic material. A water-blockable gel is located in the buffer tube and a series of strength members are configured in a close-packed arrangement around the buffer tube. A metal conductor surrounds the series of strength members and a plastic jacket encapsulating the metal conductor.

Abstract:
An optical fiber cable includes pairs of transmission lines having length extensions and color coding to facilitate cable system assembly. Each transmission line is preferably constructed from unitary fibers including a P-type fiber and an N-type fiber with the length extensions of the same P-type and N-type fiber at each end respectively. The P-type fiber and the N-type fiber are preferably colored differently to indicate transmission direction. The P-type fiber and N-type fiber in one pair of transmission lines are preferably colored differently than the P-type fiber and N-type fiber in other pairs.

Abstract:
An optical fiber cable (20) includes a longitudinally extending copper core member (34). The core member is formed with at least one groove (36) in which is disposed at least one optical fiber. The optical fiber is coupled sufficiently to the core member preferably by an ultraviolet light energy cured material to substantially inhibit relative movement between the optical fiber and the core member when forces are applied to the cable. A sheath system which includes a plastic jacket (112) is disposed about the core member. The sheath system includes a strength member system which includes longitudinally extending copper wires (105, 105) and steel wires (101, 107). Disposed about the steel and copper wires is a steel shield (110) which provides hermetic protection for the optical fibers. A waterblocking material (108) is disposed among the wires and between an inner layer of the wires and the core member to cooperate with the compressive engagement of the inner layer of strength members with the core member to couple the strength members to the core member.

Abstract:
An improved deepwater optical fiber cable with abrasion protection and techniques for manufacturing the same are provided. For example, the abrasion protected deepwater cable may be a modification or enhancement of an existing special application (SPA) optical fiber cable. One or more additional layers of metallic tape and jackets may be added to the outermost layer of the SPA cable. The tape and jacket layers may have different thicknesses and may be made from different materials to optimize protection against man-made objects or otherwise naturally occurring materials in deep water environments, such as fish aggregation devices (FADs).
