  • US Classification:
    455439, 455436, 455442
  • Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus that enables handover of a mobile station between a cellular network and a wireless network without control intervention from the cellular network and independent of employed air interface technology. The signaling and control of a switch, for example SS7 messaging, is not required to achieve the handovers implemented by the present invention. In particular, a call is connected ( ) between a mobile station ( ) and a remote station ( ) through a media gateway ( ). The media gateway is connected to the mobile station via a first connection line and to the remote station via a second connection line. When the mobile station has entered ( ) a transition area ( ), a third connection line is established ( ) between the media gateway and the mobile station. Communication between the media gateway and the mobile station then is handed-over ( ) from the first connection line to the third connection line and, thereafter, the first connection line is disconnected ( ).

  • International Classification:
    H04L012/28
  • US Classification:
    370352, 370401, 370410, 370522
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus for multi-media communication includes transmitting a first session invite request () having a plurality of first call transaction identifiers (), wherein each of the first call transaction identifiers () has a first call transaction value (). Thereupon, the method and apparatus engages in a first communication session using the first session invite request (). Concurrently, a second session invite request (), having a plurality of second call transaction identifiers () having a second call transaction value (), is also transmitted. A determination is made if the second session invite request () is duplicative by comparing the first and second call transaction values () of the first and second call transaction identifiers (). A second communication session is engaged if the second session invite request () is not duplicative such that the first communication session and the second communication session create a multi-media session.

  • Abstract:
In a wireless code-division multiple access (CDMA) system (), a talkgroup () of subscriber units is provided. A sub-talkgroup () of subscriber units, forming a part of the talkgroup is assigned at least one inbound channel (). The talkgroup is assigned outbound channels (). Members of the sub-talkgroup may simultaneously transmit voice information () using the at least one inbound channel, which voice information is summed () and re-transmitted to the talkgroup using the outbound channels. Voice information is summed so that an individual talker receives summed voice information without the individual subscriber's voice content. Subscriber units in the sub-listengroup are allowed to transmit voice information only after requesting, and receiving, an additional inbound channel.

  • Assignee:
    Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
  • International Classification:
    H04Q 7/20
  • US Classification:
    455519, 455416, 455450
  • Abstract:
During a group call, each remote unit () receives a downlink supplemental transmission () that contains high-speed data (e. g. , video). A single supplemental channel is utilized for each base station (). On the uplink side, the supplemental channel is shared among all remote units, however only one remote unit () is allowed to transmit at a time utilizing the uplink supplemental channel. A decision is made as to which remote unit is providing a highest-voice-energy fundamental channel uplink, and that remote unit is assigned the uplink supplemental channel. The remote unit, that is currently transmitting utilizing the uplink supplemental channel, has its transmission broadcast (via downlink supplemental channels ()) to all other remote units participating in the multicast.

In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention all remote units () participating in a group call can actively transmit uplink communications to their respective base stations () via low-data rate traffic channels (). The remote units having the highest transmit energies are summed and broadcast to all remote units () participating in the group call. Because only those remote units having the highest transmit energies are summed and broadcast, network congestion is greatly reduced.
