Tagline:
Stanley A. Terman, PhD, MD, CEO and Medical Director of the non-profit organization Caring Advocates, whose goal is to help people attain timely, peaceful transitions A) by informing them about their end-of-life conditions and choices; B) by helping them create an ''ironclad strategy''; and later, C) by helping to encourage future physician and decision-makers to honor the patient's Known Wishes. In addition to service, Caring Advocates' educational program informs people that although professionals and lay people may be well-intentioned, some make assumptions that actually violate the First Principle of Medical Ethics: DO NO HARM. One of Caring Advocates' research projects is to learn what choices people will make for their end-of-life treatment--if they are adequately informed.
Bragging Rights:
Medical and Executive Director Caring Advocates January 2000 – Present (13 years 6 months) Dr. Terman is the founder, CEO and Medical Director of Caring Advocates, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that helps people plan and then fulfill their end-of-life wishes. Caring Advocates offers education and clinical service... first to help people decide what their end-of-life wishes are, and then to help them express their Known Wishes in a clear and convincing way. To prove later they did have “sound mind,” Advance Care Planner can record the process of sorting My Way Cards as they make their advance end-of-life decisions, one symptom at a time. So that health care providers can request immediate FAXes or downloads of their most recent Advance Care Planning forms, patients can wear DNR-display pouches that have scannable barcodes that link “smart” phones to their personal web sites. These sites can also play short videos of patients that explain WHAT treatments they DO or do NOT want and WHY, and of physicians who state they had “sound mind” and gave informed consent—a powerful combination so that others will honor patients’ expressed wishes. (More information: www.CaringAdvocates.org and www.MyLastWishes.org) and two videos, “A Living Will for Dementia: It’s easy and effective,” (9 minutes) on YouTube.com at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRoovjK20F8 and “The MyLastWishes.org Program” (by request).
