Abstract:

A monolithic wavelength stabilized system comprises a laser monolithically formed with a waveguide splitter having at least two branches. Non-identical resonators having different wavelengths are operatively coupled to each branch of the splitter and a photodiode is communicatively coupled to receive the output from each non-identical resonator. A control unit receives the photocurrent outputs from the photodiodes, determines based on the photocurrents whether the wavelength of the laser signal is at a desired value, and transmits a feedback signal to the laser to move the laser output toward the desired wavelength. The laser, splitter, resonators, and photodiodes are monolithically formed in a single chip using asymmetric waveguides.

Abstract:

An asymmetric twin waveguide (ATG) structure with quantum-well intermixing in the taper region of the active waveguide is disclosed. The structure comprises a first waveguide, a second waveguide, and a taper formed in the second waveguide. The taper has an intermixed area formed therein comprising a plurality of quantum wells intermixed with a plurality of barriers. The quantum wells and barriers may be intermixed using plasma-enhanced intermixing such as, for example, Argon plasma enhanced intermixing. Quantum-well intermixing reduces absorption loss normally encountered in the movement of light between waveguides.

Abstract:

Optical cavities in a stacked organic light emitting device (SOLEDs) can shift or attenuate the light emitted by the individual organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) in the stack. Interference caused by reflections within the stack, absorption, positioning of the light source, and the polarization of the emitted light can all determine how the spectra of the emitted light are affected by the SOLED structure. A detailed model that provides a good fit to measured SOLED emissions can be used to predict how a SOLED will affect light emitted by OLEDs. As a result, SOLED geometries that will optimize color saturation and external quantum efficiency can be predicted.

An organic light emitting device is described, having an OLED including an anode, a cathode, and at least one organic layer between the anode and cathode. At least a portion of an electrode surface includes a plurality of scattering structures positioned in a partially disordered pattern resembling nodes of a two dimensional lattice. The scattering structures are positioned around the nodes of the two dimensional lattice with the average distance between the position of each scattering structure and a respective node of the lattice is from 0 to 0.5 of the distance between adjacent lattice nodes. A method of manufacturing an organic light emitting device and a method of enhancing the light-extraction efficiency of an organic light emitting device are also described.
