Abstract:

A cartridge syringe with a slideable protective sheath to prevent accidental needle sticks following administration of a an injection is described. The device comprises a syringe cartridge, comprising a constricted distal end region, a piston movably disposed within the barrel, a hub having an axial bore mounted to the constricted distal end region of the barrel, and a hollow needle, the proximal end of the hollow needle projecting through the axial bore of the hub and the distal end of the needle having a pointed tip; and a protective sheath having an inner diameter greater than the external diameter of the syringe cartridge, such that the protective sheath is slideably movable substantially coaxially along the external surface of the cartridge barrel from a first position in which the tip of the needle extends past both ends of the protective sheath, to a second position in which the distal end of the sheath extends past the tip of the needle.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a shield for use on a prefilled hypodermic syringe assembly. The shield is intended to be retrofitable over a sheath/needle sub-assembly of the hypodermic syringe assembly in such a manner that insertion of the sheath/needle sub-assembly into the shield can be simply and easily accomplished by a medical worker, and subsequent extraction of the sheath from the shield is prevented by retention members which are formed from the housing of the shield, and which protrude into the chamber to hold the sheath. The retention member are formed so as to allow the sheath to be easily slidable into the chamber of the shield, yet engage the exterior surface of the sheath to resist extraction thereof once the sheath has engaged the retention members. Also disclosed are unique method of manufacturing the sheath of the present invention along with preferred methods of use thereof.

Abstract:

A needleless syringe comprising a barrel, a plunger and a truncated cannula secured to said barrel by an externally stepped hub connector comprising (1) a tubular skirt section of greatest circumference secured to the constricted distal end of said barrel through which said fluid transfer tube extends; (2) a tubular male tapered section of smaller circumference situated beyond the constricted distal end of said barrel and through which said fluid transfer tube extends; and (3) a tubular forward extension of smallest circumference into which said fluid transfer tube projects to a point near the discharge aperture of said forward extension, said forward extension having an annular projection about its circumference set forward of said tapered section a distance sufficient to create a seal between said tapered section and a female Luer slip fitting of a valve actuated intravenous port device when said annular projection opens said valve, said annular projection having a circumference smaller than the smallest circumference of said tapered section. The discharge aperture of said forward extension is blunt and of sufficient diameter to minimize any chance of puncturing the user's or patient's skin.
