Abstract:

Described techniques enable a particular user to automatically share a piece of content with a group of users. To share the content, the particular user navigates to a Website or the like to identify the desired piece of content. The particular user then chooses to share the piece of content by actuating a button, an icon, or the like displayed within the content (e. g. , Web content) or displayed within the browser's toolbar. In some embodiments, the users with whom the piece of content is then shared each include the particular user within a contact list. This document also describes techniques capable of enabling the particular user to allow a third party to select and share a piece of content. In some instances, the piece of content comprises an advertisement. This piece of content may be shared with a group of users that include the particular user as a contact.

Abstract:

An approach is described for maintaining multiple presence objects associated with a single entity. The different presence objects correspond to different respective aspects of the entity's presence. Each presence object includes subscriber information and permission information associated therewith. The subscriber information identifies the subscribers that subscribe to receive notifications for a particular presence object. The permission information identifies the users who are entitled to receive notifications for the particular presence object. By virtue of the use of multiple objects, the entity can control access to its presence information with a high degree of granularity.

Abstract:

Techniques to manage large numbers of subscribers to real-time events are described. Embodiments may filter subscribers dynamically into buckets where publications are distributed only to subscribers in the same bucket as the publisher. Buckets may be dynamically created and removed to lower or raise the publication rate for subscribers to an acceptable level. Embodiments may use a two-level bucketing algorithm for filtering that is memory and CPU efficient, and scales with large numbers of subscriptions. The techniques may also reduce the context loss for a subscriber when a new bucket has to be created and subscribers distributed between buckets. Embodiments may be scaled out to multiple servers, to accommodate very large numbers of subscribers and publications. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Abstract:

One or more techniques and/or systems are disclosed for sharing a connection to a remote-based application running on a server. A plurality of client-side browser instantiations can be associated with the remote-based application, such as by running instantiations of the remote application locally on respective client machines. The client-side browser instantiations are able to write to and read from a local global storage regarding the remote-based application, and are notified of a state change to the local global storage, without polling. A first browser instantiation registers as a primary instantiation with the local global storage, and connects to the server for the remote-based application.
