Abstract:

A technique for shutting down virtual machines in a computer system which comprises a real computer and a virtual machine operating system. The virtual machine operating system comprises a common base portion and a plurality of virtual machines sharing the common base portion. According to one feature of the present invention, the common base portion receives a shutdown signal from the real computer. The shutdown signal specifies a time period for shutdown of the common base portion or the virtual machine operating system. Next, the common base portion determines a time period for shutdown of the virtual machines by subtracting a time required to shutdown the common base portion from the specified time period. Next, the common base portion sends requests to the virtual machines to shut down in an orderly manner within the time period determined for shutdown of the virtual machines. The common base portion determines when and if each of the virtual machines shuts down in an orderly manner.

Abstract:

System and computer program product for updating an SSL certificate for a server. First program instructions detect when a change has been made to a name, domain or IP address of the server and detect that the server is using an SSL certificate based on a name, domain or IP address applicable before the change. In response, the first program instructions notify an administrator that a change is required to the SSL certificate to reflect the change to the name, domain or IP address. Second program instructions respond to a request by the administrator, to automatically create a new SSL certificate signing request. The new SSL certificate signing request is a form which can be sent to an SSL certificate authority. Third program instructions respond to another request by the administrator, to send the new SSL certificate signing request to the SSL certificate authority. Fourth program instructions respond to receipt of a new SSL certificate from the SSL certificate authority and another request by the administrator, to substitute the new SSL certificate for the existing SSL certificate.

Abstract:

A system, method and program product for updating first and second parameters of a recipient computer console from first and second donor computer consoles. The recipient console registers with the first donor console to receive notification when the first donor console has an update to the first parameter. The recipient console registers with the second donor console to receive notification when the second donor console has an update to the second parameter. After registering the recipient console with the first donor console, the recipient console receives the notification from the first donor console and updates the first parameter from the first donor console accordingly. After registering the recipient console with the second donor console, the recipient console receives notification from the second donor console and updates the second parameter from the second donor console accordingly. The parameters can be a help desk phone number, an identity of an authorized user or an authorization of a user.

Abstract:

A method and system for providing a user interface in a data processing system to be utilized for performing a plurality of tasks on a plurality of diverse central processing complexes, wherein processes utilized to perform the plurality of tasks are transparent to a user, and wherein the user interface utilized to perform the plurality of tasks is common across diverse central processor complexes. A library containing interface parameters for each central processing complex is established. The interface parameters include information necessary to tailor the user interface for the specific target central processing complex, as well as processes for performing selected tasks within each of the central processing complexes. The user is prompted to select a task for at least one of the diverse central processing complexes. At least one interface parameter from the library of interface parameters is selected in response to the user selecting a task for at least one of the diverse central processing complexes.

Abstract:

A personal computer or workstation running a Web browser point and click interface is used to display and send information for remotely controlling a computer such as a mainframe. In the preferred embodiment, a web site or "home-page" is constructed on a secure HTTP (hyper text transfer protocol) server which comprises a Hardware Management Console (HMC). A user logs on to the Internet World Wide Web in a conventional manner by entering the address or uniform resource locator (URL) to connect to the secure HTTP server. Upon entry of a correct password the Hardware Management Console (HMC) home-page will be displayed. Icons representing various mainframe computer components are displayed which link to additional pages which the user can click on to monitor and control the mainframe computer. The color of the icons provide a summary of the status its representative component (e. g. , a green icon indicates that the representative component is functioning is normally, red indicates an abnormal condition, and blue indicates that a message is available).
