Having experienced some success as a late-blooming journalist beginning in 1996, I found myself at a not unwelcome career nexus as an indirect result of the now tiresome economic downturn. While keeping my mind slightly ajar to new possibilities, I launched a media business with a regional reach, a determinedly skewed perspective and a tight budget. During a podunk award-winning journalism career for three weekly newspaper chains, I was intimately involved in all facets of editorial production, from reporting and writing (investigative journalism, hard news, politics, government, business, sports, arts and entertainment, commentary, etc.) to editing, headline-writing, photography, page design, layout, pagination and paste-up, to motivating reporters and editors and running an entire editorial organization. I have written god knows how many freelance articles for newspapers and magazines, satirical and humor publications, etc. For The Nation, I investigated the specter of a for-profit black market toxic waste dumping industry in the Hudson Valley and its intertwining relationships with IBM, the mob, and the Pataki administration. Being an old man who hasn't minded making a career change now and then, I've also had considerable experience in local and state government as a welfare policy expert, systems and programmer/analyst, and in music as a longtime performer, bandleader and Mercury performing artist, among other things. My band, Milo Z, toured for years with the Neville Brothers, Al Green, The Meters, Spin Doctors, and Joan Osborne. I've also been a New York City bike messenger and was a pioneering pedicab driver in Manhattan in the 1990s.
