Abstract:

A laser marking/imaging system including a passively Q-switched microlaser having a saturable absorber which upon reaching an energy threshold emits a pulse of light through an optical output. The microlaser is electrically connected to circuitry which provides power to the microlaser, and has a simmer mode and a lasing mode. In the simmer mode, power provided to the microlaser is maintained at an energy level below the energy threshold, and in the lasing mode, power provided to the microlaser raises the energy level of the microlaser above the energy threshold. A guidance mechanism can direct the pulse of light from the optical output along a path toward an image receiving target when the microlaser is in the lasing mode.

Abstract:

The motor efficiency of a rotating X-ray tube having an anode assembly and a cathode assembly, can be greatly improved. The improved efficiency x-ray tube motor comprises a stator and rotor assembly having an air gap between the stator and rotor. The improved efficiency is achieved by reducing the air gap. The stator is operated at anode potential and electrically connected through an anode high voltage cable.

Abstract:

X-ray tube electron beam focusing utilizing a cathode having a large cavity therein in which an electron cloud is generated and which is shielded from the primary electric field between the cathode and the anode. The electron cloud flows from the cavity through a small narrow passage and into the primary electric field. An opposed spaced apart pair of electrical grids each comprising an array of individual electrode segments have selected opposed segments electronegatively biased to change the cross-section of the passing electron stream therebetween. The altered cross-section of the electron stream determines the size of the focal spot of the electron beam impacting the target anode.

An induction motor rotor particularly for x-ray tube applications comprises a series of hollow cylinders fitting concentrically on each other and on a motor shaft. The first cylinder is a highly heat resistant and electrically insulating material. The next cylinder is a highly magnetic material cylinder fitting on the first cylinder. The next and outermost cylinder is an electrically conductive material providing the armature conductor of the induction motor rotor.

Abstract:

A rotating X-ray tube comprises a cathode assembly including a cathode and a cathode current supply, and an anode assembly having an anode current controlled via the cathode current supply. A filament for emitting electrons is separated from the cathode. A cathode cup supports the filament and provides electron field shaping assistance. The X-ray tube further comprises a distributed capacitance for affecting the cathode cup electron field, and an insulator leakage resistance. The cathode cup is allowed to float on the insulator leakage resistance, whereby voltage associated with the distributed capacitance and the leakage resistance is allowed to remain relatively constant.

Abstract:

An x-ray generating device having an improved high efficiency motor is disclosed. The x-ray generating device comprises a cathode assembly and an anode assembly arranged opposite each other in a vacuum vessel. According to the invention, the anode assembly is coupled and rotated by the rotor of a high efficiency motor which has near traditional gaps by positioning the motor stator assembly in close proximity to the rotor of the motor and applying a same potential to both the stator core and the rotor. The stator assembly further includes poly-phase stator winding coils arranged on the stator core. The coils are electrically insulated from the stator core, and they are supplied with poly-phase AC signals from a motor controller to induce magnetic interactions and rotate the rotor and the anode assembly. Thus, the present invention provides for electrical isolation between the x-ray operating potential and the reference potential of the motor controller without the need for a separate isolation transformer which negatively impacts cost, efficiency and reliability.
