The invention provides a method and system for content-based filtering of multicast information. A set of sources (S) which desire to distribute potentially large numbers of categories of differing information each associates a content descriptor (CD) with messages including information in those categories, so that a set of recipients (R) can receive information in at least some of those categories. A mapping server (M) associates a multicast address (MA) and a content mask (CM) with each content descriptor, so that network elements (N), such as routers, in the network can distribute only those messages which are of interest to recipients in multicast distribution trees for those multicast addresses. Each source generates content descriptors for each differentiable topic in a tree structured hierarchy, and obtains a multicast address and a content mask for the broadest content descriptor it is capable of distributing. Each recipient obtains the associated source, multicast address, and content mask, for each content descriptor of interest, and uses that information to join the multicast distribution tree for that information.

Abstract:
A method of distributing route information is described. The method includes maintaining a number of entries, indicating that at least one of the entries, requiring processing by a first process, has been processed by the first process, and causing the first process to process another of the entries requiring processing by the first process based on the indication. In doing so, the first process uses the indication to decide which of the entries requiring processing the process has already processed and which of those entries remain to be processed. Each one of the entries preferably corresponds to at least one characteristic of a network connection between a number of network elements, such as a route between network elements.

Abstract:
A packet-switch system utilizes a linecard-to-switch (LCS) protocol to integrate linecards with a switch core. Since the linecards include a majority of the buffering of the system and are located physically away from switch core, the size of the switch core can be reduced in size. The LCS protocol is a label-swapping, credit-based, flow-control, which enables the system to operate without requiring such information as the number of port modules available within a switch core or what Qualities of Service (QoS) or multicast flows are available. In addition, the LCS protocol enables the linecards to contain and manage the majority of the buffers in the system, and also to control the data drop policy within the system.

Abstract:
A router receives destination address information for a packet and determines, among entries in a first forwarding table, a closest match for the received destination address information. The router receives a pointer to a second forwarding table in accordance with the closest match determined in the first forwarding table and determines, among entries in the second forwarding table, a closest match for the received destination address information.
Providing Services For Multiple Virtual Private Networks

Abstract:
A network device provides services for multiple virtual private networks (VPNs) via one or more virtual hosts. For example, a router receives packets from multiple VPNs, and communicates the packets to a service card via a logical interface in accordance with a forwarding information base. A virtual host within the service card processes the packets and provides a service for the network device from which the packet was sent. The virtual host may, for example, provide print services for network devices within a corresponding VPN. The virtual host acts, in essence, as a print server within the corresponding VPN. In this manner, the router may eliminate the need for the customer associated with the VPN to maintain print servers within remote customer sites.
Routing Protocol Failover Between Control Units Within A Network Router

Abstract:
A device includes a primary control unit and a standby control unit. The standby control unit records routing communications exchanged between the primary control unit and an external routing device in accordance with a routing protocol. A standby routing process executing on the standby control unit processes the recorded routing communications when the primary control unit fails. The standby routing process generates state information for executing the routing protocol on the standby control unit without requiring that routing sessions be reestablished with the external routing device.
