Abstract:

A blood filter unit comprising an assembly for supporting a filter cartridge, a filter cartridge, and a housing for the assembly and cartridge. The assembly for supporting the cartridge comprises a permeable cylindrical core with a bottom member and a top cap. The filter media, in the form of a cartridge, is disposed about the periphery of the core and extends between the bottom member and top cap. The core contacts the media only at intermittent areas spaced longitudinally and circumferentially about the core. The core, media and walls of the housing are tapered with respect to each other.

Abstract:

A high-strength ligament prosthesis having biological acceptability, flexibility, porosity and resistance to prolonged stress in excess of 100 Kg with little change in modulus, and less than 20% ultimate elongation is provided. These characteristics make the high-strength prosthesis favorable for critical applications, such as knee and ankle repair. The high-strength prosthesis is constructed of a biological compatible yarn having an outer shell with an "H-beam" cross-section and a velour surface to encourage rapid invasion by host tissue and a reinforcing core of the same yarn. The ends of the reinforcing core and outer wall are fitted with end tips to limit displacement of the core within the outer shell and to facilitate positioning of the prosthesis during surgery with minimal effort. An enlarged elongated end tip is particularly well adapted for special surgical procedures, such as arthoscopic procedures.

Abstract:

A device for inserting into the vagina of a patient for delivery of a medicament in the vagina. The walls of the tubular member comprising the device are comprised of water-swellable materials having a higher porosity at one end than the other, the relatively low porosity end being positioned distally in the vagina to the relatively high porosity end. The medicament is contained within a reservoir in the tubular member and delivered to the vagina through the pores in the walls of the tubular member at different rates depending upon the porosity. Also provided is a method of delivering a medicament to the vagina of a patient.
