Abstract:A method and system for optimal radio channel management in a distributed connection and transport network. The method includes the steps of determining the quality of service required by a communication session, determining whether transport resources are available for immediate use by the communication session, and queuing the communication session for assignment to transport resources in accordance with the quality of service required and the availability of transport resources for immediate use. The system includes a set of assignable transport resources, an interface for requesting a communication session, a detection processor in communication with the interface for determining the quality of service required by the session, a resource processor in communication with the detection processor determining whether transport resources are available for immediate use by the session, and a queuing processor in communication with the resource processor holding the communication session for prioritized allocation to the transport resources.

Abstract:A wireless communication system comprises a connectionless packet network coupled to a plurality of sites that are in location areas. The sites join respective location area multicast addresses to receive messages from other sites in their location area. Communication units desiring to participate in talkgroup calls need only to register affiliation with a first site of the location area. Upon the first site receiving an affiliation message, it joins a payload multicast group address to receive payload for the talkgroup. In alternative embodiments, the first site sends, via the location area multicast address, either control message(s) or tunneled payload associated with the talkgroup call to secondary site(s) of the location area. The sites initiate paging sequences to determine whether communication units at their sites desire to participate in the call and, based on the responses, the sites may deliver stored payload and/or join the payload multicast group address to receive payload for the call. In this manner, a centralized entity such as a VLR is not needed to keep track of communication units in the location area.

Abstract:In a wireless ad hoc network comprising a plurality of nodes (), when a method of the present invention determines that a source node and a destination node belong to a common virtual local area network (VLAN), information is routed to the destination node using only nodes that belong to the common VLAN. If a path is not available to route the information between the source node and the destination node using only nodes that belong to the common VLAN, a default VLAN is used to route the information at least partially through the ad hoc network. Abstract:A method and apparatus for electing broadcast relay nodes (B, H, M) in an ad hoc network (). Each node (A-O) generates an attribute message including associated parameters. Each node (A-O) generates a weighted value (WV) based on the parameters. The WV can be included in the attribute message for that node, can provide a metric for ranking that node to be nominated to be a broadcast relay node, can alternatively provide a probability measure for that node to probabilistically elect itself as a broadcast relay node. The broadcast manager node (C) receives the attribute messages and elects at least one nominated node as a broadcast relay node (B, H, M) based on the attribute messages. Each node (A-O) can also initiate election of an intermediate broadcast relay node if that node fails to receive a test message within a predetermined time.
