Abstract:

An interface for handing off computer system information. The interface has a data structure stored on a computer readable medium. The data structure has fields for component data pertaining to components of a computer system. The data structure is available to be populated by a first program filling in component data using identifiers for locating the component data in the data structure. The first program is able to discover components. The component data is accessible by a second program indexing the data structure with the identifiers. The second computer program is for assisting an operating system gain the component data.

Abstract:

In one embodiment of the invention, a method of semaphoring between a system firmware and ACPI subsystem, includes: prior to entering a critical section by a first entity, checking a turn flag to determine if a second entity has a turn to access a critical section; if the second entity has the turn, then checking an In flag of the second entity to determine if the second entity is in the critical section; if the second entity is in the critical section, then waiting for the second entity to exit the critical section; and entering the critical section by the first entity. The method may further include: if the second entity is not in the critical section, then entering the critical section by the first entity.

Abstract:

Embodiments of the present invention present an apparatus coupled to an internal bus for monitoring environmental factors in a computer system including: an embedded controller having a processor; an environmental sensor that provides data related to environmental conditions; a reset generator; and a power source. A LAN interface may be configured to remotely access and control the embedded controller. Further, the internal bus may be selected from any of the following: a PCI bus, an ISA bus, a DIMM slot, a SIMM slot, a PCMCIA slot, or a server blade slot. Abstract:

A method of allocating memory in a memory unit includes creating a data structure containing a list of all available memory segments; and assigning a bias to each available memory segment. The bias indicates how to allocate that available memory segment in response to a resource request wherein the resource request is for a new entry in the memory unit that will be fragmented with at least two fragments of the new entry in the memory unit at being at different locations in the memory unit, the bias for an available memory segment comprising an indication of where within the new fragmented entry to be made in the memory unit a corresponding available memory segment should be used.

A computer system has extensible firmware interface firmware. The EFI firmware loads incomplete virtual boot data from a resource manager and then completes the boot data. The completed boot data is used to find an operating-system image to boot. The complete virtual boot data is transferred to the resource manager.

Abstract:

A method of identifying a failing PCI slot In a computer having a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) system having a host bridge coupling a plurality of PCI slots of a PCI bus to a processor where the computer uses firmware to access the base address registers. A firmware maintained PCI resource allocation map is created which addresses for PCI slots associated with base address registers and sizes of address ranges for these addresses are mapped. The firmware maintained PCI resource allocation map is updated upon the occurrence of at least of firmware being called to execute at least one of a hot plug operation and a PCI configuration space transaction. Upon the host bridge logging an error address due to a failing PCI slot, the failing PCI slot is identified from the information in the firmware maintained PCI resource allocation map.

Examples disclosed herein relate to selecting and loading firmware volumes. A computing device is booted to a state where the computing device is capable of accessing a memory available to multiple other computing devices. The memory includes multiple firmware volumes. In one example, at least one firmware volume is selected based on a hardware configuration or hardware components of the computing device. The selected firmware volumes are loaded.
