Abstract:

A system for viewing, ordering, and printing social expression cards includes a database preparation system, a number of card display/order systems, and a number of card printing systems. The database preparation system uses a scanner to input images from a plurality of cards, or a computer software program to create images for use in card designs. A card description database defines the layout of each card in terms of its component images and text, and their locations on the card. The database preparation system can also build a card parameter database to enable a user to select a desired category of cards. Each card display/order system accesses these databases and image files by computer network, modem, cable television, or by transfer of removable data storage media. The card display/order system allows the user to input parameters to pick the category of cards to be displayed. The user can order a selected card to be printed and input information to personalize the card.

Abstract:

The disclosed energy control system employs the serving electronic stored program PBX to regulate the operation of energy consuming devices located throughout a hotel/motel or office building in accordance with one or more modes of operation as offered by an algorithm stored in the PBX memory. This is accomplished by equipping each guest room or office with a control circuit to regulate the operation of the energy consuming devices located in that room. These control circuits are activated by the presence of an audio frequency tone on the telephone line associated with the room. To minimize the impact of this scheme on the traffic capacity of the PBX time division switching network, all activated control circuits are concurrently connected to a single time slot, which supplies the required audio frequency tone.

Abstract:

A privacy circuit for use in a key telephone station set is disclosed. Using only a single relay, the privacy circuit operates to exclude the user from a busy central office line while allowing the user to gain access to an idle line. The privacy circuit is positive acting and cannot be circumvented by manipulating the keys and/or switchhook while at the same time allowing service to continue during a local power failure. Additional circuitry is provided to allow conference connections among key telephone sets equipped with privacy circuits.

A system for indexing and retrieving graphic and sound data ("entity data") employs a thesaurus of descriptors and equivalent words (e. g. , synonyms, metonyms, foreign language equivalents, and misspellings). The system can be used, for example, to index and retrieve images, sounds, and related data for social expression cards, video segments, multimedia presentations, photographs, audio data, and the like. The thesaurus is built by allowing the user to specify a number of descriptors and equivalent words ("meaning referent sets") for each entity data, incorporating these descriptors and meaning referent sets into the thesaurus, and linking the entity data to the meaning referent sets in the thesaurus by using entity identifiers. Entity data can then be retrieved by prompting the user to specify a list of descriptors, locating the descriptors and any associated meaning referent sets in the thesaurus, and retrieving entity data linked to these meaning referent sets.

Abstract:

A tape head positioning system for a tape cartridge drive data backup system having a stepper motor with a lead screw connected to the stepper motor and a follower nut threadedly engaging the lead screw. The follower nut has a formed slot for receiving one end of a lever arm. The other end of the lever arm engages in a formed slot a head mounting assembly carrying the tape head and the lever arm is pivoted a first predetermined distance from the first end and a second predetermined distance from the second end. The ratio of the first predetermined distance to the second predetermined distance determines a mechanical advantage for the system thereby causing an inexpensive coarser stepper motor to effectuate fine adjustments of the tape head.
