Abstract:

Apparatus and method are described for interoperatively determining, during a trailing procedure conducted in connection with total hip arthroplasty, a combination of neck length and femoral head offset required in a femoral component for establishing appropriate hip mechanics in a prosthetic hip joint to be implanted at an implant site. A trial femoral head is coupled for selective movement relative to a femoral stem component to move the trial femoral head longitudinally and laterally relative to a predetermined direction among selected combinations of trial distance and trial offset to evaluate hip mechanics and determine interoperatively an appropriate combination of trial distance and trial offset corresponding to the combination of neck length and femoral head offset required in the prosthetic hip joint.

Abstract:

A system for cutting bone includes a cutting guide including a metal block having a guide surface provided thereon, and an oscillating tip saw having a cutting blade assembly extending from a distal end thereof. At least one element of the cutting blade assembly is magnetic for generating a magnetic attraction to the guide surface of the cutting guide so as to control the orientation of the cutting blade assembly during a bone cutting procedure. A femoral hip prosthesis comprises a main member, a modular member and a means for connecting the two. The main member has a stem portion and a body portion which are adapted for insertion into the intramedullary canal. The body portion has lateral, posterior, and anterior sides adapted to mate with the bone and has a medial side configured and dimensioned to receive a modular member. Abstract:

A method is used for aligning an acetabular cup insertion instrument by taking a single lateral view pre-operative digital x-ray of a standing patient's pelvis. The natural pelvic tilt angle is determined by locating an anterior pelvic plane (APP) which is defined by first, second and third points on the anterior of the pelvis and determining the angle between the APP and a coronal plane perpendicular to the surface on which the patient is standing. The patient is then placed on a surface of an operating room table in a supine position. A position tracking device is placed on the patient's pelvis to track movement. Thereafter an operating room navigation or orientation system is used to relocate the APP defined by the first, second and third points. A cup insertion instrument having a position tracking device thereon is oriented using the navigation or orientation system.

Abstract:

An alignment system for aligning an acetabular cup insertion instrument utilizes pre-operative preferably standing x-rays and intra-operative x-rays to allow the surgeon to compensate for the position of a patient on an operating room table. The system uses a programmable computer connected to a digital x-ray system and an navigation tracking system to provide input for calculating the inclination and anteversion angles of an acetabular cup impactor based on a pre-operative plan developed from the standing x-rays. The system calculates changes in lengths and angles between anatomic landmarks on the pelvis to alter the intra-operative orientation of the acetabular reaming and impacting instruments to produce the desired inclination and anteversion angles when the pelvis is reoriented as the patient is placed on an operating table.
