A user interface with an operator tool tip for navigating and controlling a printing system to generate documents received from one or more input units such as, for example, a computer network, scanner, or modem. Since the operator or user wishes to offer a wide variety of printing options to customers and complete customer orders as quickly as possible, minimizing the interruption of print jobs is a very important priority. By replenishing supplies such as stock and toner in a timely fashion, the use of the printing systems can be maximized. A method and graphical user interface system provide fault notes in a printing system. A fault screen window is provided that depicts faults for individual supply unit devices and output unit devices which can be opened by selecting the fault button and/or fault icon. A fault notes window is also provided for user editable text linked to the fault screen window. The fault notes window displays only user editable text related to a selected device or displays only user editable text related to the system when no device is selected. A fault notes icon is configured to appear when user editable text has previously been entered on said fault notes window.

Abstract:

Informing the user when consumables and/or customer replaceable units will have to be resupplied, changed and/or replaced, relative to the jobs sent to the image forming system, is a beneficial way to avoid unnecessary printing delays. When a job is added to a job queue or repositioned within the job queue, a warning can be associated with that job, and displayed to the user. With this information, the user can pre-emptively add a consumable and/or to replace a customer replaceable unit to avoid delays and maintain productivity. Alternatively, if such a system fault would occur prior to an urgent job reaching the top of the job queue, the user can manipulate the order and/or presence of the various jobs in the queue to ensure the high-priority job is completed before the consumable is fully exhausted and/or the customer replaceable unit reaches the end of its useful life.
