Abstract:

A computer-implemented integrated expert system for the identification of abnormal events in an industrial plant. The expert system integrates a model-based expert system with a rule-based expert system. The model-based expert system receives data on the operating conditions of a process unit in the industrial plant and calculates one or more results that determine whether the process unit is operating abnormally. The rule-based expert system also receives data on the operating conditions of the process unit and applies its rules to the process data. The rule-based expert system also applies its rules to the one or more results generated by the model-based expert system. The integrated system may also suppress any redundant messages generated by the model-based expert system.

Abstract:

An improved system for generating an abrasive fluid jet is shown and described. In a preferred embodiment, abrasive is fed from a bulk hopper into an air isolator having a baffle that limits the flow of air and abrasive through the air isolator, thereby venting air from the abrasive. An on/off device having a rod coupled to a stopper is provided within the air isolator, the rod being selectively raised and lowered in a vertical direction. A discharge orifice is provided in a bottom surface of the air isolator, the stopper covering the discharge orifice when the rod is in a lowered position, thereby preventing the discharge of abrasive from the air isolator. A metering disk is provided adjacent the discharge orifice, an orifice in the metering disk being aligned with the discharge orifice, such that abrasive exiting the air isolator flows through the metering disk. A vented adapter is coupled to the air isolator, which helps to control the flow of abrasive through the system and serves to eject any abrasive or fluid that may back up into the system due to a clog, thereby preventing fluid from backing up into the air isolator. Abrasive is then fed from the vented adapter through a feedline into a mixing chamber of a cutting head, the abrasive being entrained by a high-pressure fluid jet, such that the abrasive and high-pressure fluid jet mix and are ejected through a mixing tube coupled to the cutting head as an abrasive fluid jet.

Abstract:

A vacuum-type pickup and transfer apparatus for irregularly surfaced, shaped and sized objects such as populated printed wiring boards (PWBs) is disclosed. The apparatus includes a plurality of downwardly directed vacuum conduits that have enlarged lips at their lower end. It also includes a thin, flexible, non-porous membrane which extends transversely and loosely between the conduits and through which the conduits extend so that their lower ends communicate with the region below the membrane. The pick-up apparatus is moved down to the PWBs and vacuum applied, so that the flexible membrane seals against the PWBs, adapting and conforming to any irregular surfaces, sizes and shapes. The apparatus includes a control for selectively regulating the movement of the pick-up apparatus and the application of the vacuum. The PWBs are accordingly moved to the desired location and the vacuum released to release the PWBs.

Abstract:

A plastic bag closer slider has a separator normally resting in notches in the tops of slider track strips, when the slider is at a bag-closed stop. As the slider is moved in the bag-opening direction, the separator is cammed downward by ends of the notches to disengage interlocking profile features and open the tag. In another embodiment, notches are omitted. The separator is manufactured with a normally down position but is resiliently biased upward when the bag is closed. As the slider is moved in the bag-opening direction, the pointed end of the separator wedge descends between the strips to open the bag. When the slider is moved in the bag-closing direction, the separator is cammed upward by the drag of the strip tops and the tapering walls of the slider squeeze interlocking profile features together, closing the bag.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for manufacturing recloseable plastic bags with engageable mating profiles where the bags are provided open for the consumer. The profiles are initially provided in the fully engaged condition within an elongate, longitudinally cut tube. The profiles are then periodically fused, tacked, or attached together at the approximate locations where the tube is to be cut into bags. Upon tacking, the profiles are pulled apart by frictionally engaging an area on the outside of the film, near the profiles, and between the tacks. The film is then forced away from the profiles, which at least partially pulls one profile from the other. Thereafter, the tube may be cut and sealed into bags as would otherwise normally occur.
