Abstract:

An apparatus for measuring pressure in a medium includes a laser for emitting linearly polarized light; a polarizing beam splitter that reflects the linearly polarized light from the laser; a first lens that receives and focuses the linearly polarized light from the polarizing beam splitter; an optical fiber having first and second ends, the first end for receiving the linearly polarized light from the first lens, the second end comprising a tip disposed in the medium, the tip receiving reflected light from the medium, the reflected light being transmitted back through the optical fiber and the first lens to the polarizing beam splitter; the polarizing beam splitter transmitting the reflected light that has polarization orthogonal to the linearly polarized light emitted by the laser but not transmitting the reflected light that has polarization substantially parallel to the linearly polarized light emitted by the laser; a second lens for receiving the reflected light that has polarization orthogonal to the linearly polarized light emitted by the laser; a photodiode for receiving the orthogonal reflected light from the second lens; an oscilloscope connected to the photodiode; and a delay generator connected to the photodiode, the oscilloscope and the laser.

Abstract:

An apparatus for measuring pressure in a medium comprises a laser for emitting light; a dichroic beam splitter that reflects the light from the laser; a first lens that receives and focuses the light from the beam splitter; a first optical fiber for receiving the light from the first lens; a crystal having fluorescence properties and having a hemispherical shape, the crystal being attached to an end of the first optical fiber; a second lens that receives and focuses fluorescence generated by the crystal and reflected by the dichroic beam splitter; a second optical fiber for receiving the fluorescence from the second lens; a spectrometer that receives the fluorescence from the second optical fiber; a streak camera connected to the spectrometer; a charge-coupled device connected to the spectrometer; and a delay generator connected to the charge-coupled device, the streak camera and the laser.

Abstract:

An energetic composite material is provided that includes inorganic particles and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed on the inorganic particles. The SAMs include multifunctional linking molecules and optionally non-linking molecules. The multifunctional linking molecules have linking functional groups respectively chemically bonding to a corresponding pair of the inorganic particles so that the multifunctional linking molecules interconnect the inorganic particles to one another to form a network of inorganic particles. The optional non-linking molecules include a non-linking functional group chemically bonded to a corresponding one of the inorganic particles. Preferably, the multifunctional linking molecules and/or the optional non-linking molecules are fluorinated. Also preferably, bare aluminum particles are selected as the inorganic particles and are passivated with the SAMs.

Abstract:

The thermal stability of an N,N-dinitramide salt of the formula M. sup. + �N(NO. sub. 2). sub. 2 !. sup. - where M. sup. + is a nitrogen-containing cation, is improved by mixing with the N,N-dinitramide salt a compound of the formula ##STR1## where R, R' and R" are the same or different and are aryl or alkyl. A new composition of matter is formed by mixing the N,N-dinitramide salt and the prophosphatrane compound.

Abstract:

A laser satellite communication system which avoids atmospheric, wind and turbulence effects. A satellite or high altitude platform communication system includes an earth-orbiting satellite or high altitude platform carrying a laser communications receiver and an acknowledgement transmitter. A ground terminal having a laser communications transmitter which is caused to continuously transmit large data block signals. When one block of data signals is received at the satellite or platform, an acknowledgement signal is sent to earth from the satellite or platform. The ground terminal receives the acknowledgement signal and causes the ground terminal laser communication transmitter to continuously transmit the next succeeding large block data signals. This process is repeated until all of the data has been received by the earth-orbiting satellite or high altitude platform, whereby all of the large data block signals are received by the laser communication receiver through scintillation windows in the atmosphere.

Abstract:

A highway safety traffic barrier comprises a plurality of strips cut from the treads of discarded motor vehicle tires and straightened to define substantially elongated members which are then assembled upon each other linearly, transversely or a combination of both. The assembled strips are bonded together to define an elongated impact absorbing structure having a predetermined cross-sectional shape. A process is also disclosed.
