Apparatus And Method For Preparing Strips Of Web And Winding Them Into A Cartridge
Joseph A. Watkins - Rochester NY Joseph E. Yokajty - Rochester NY Thomas A. Sisson - Hilton NY Thomas P. Melanson - Rochester NY
Assignee:
Eastman Kodak Company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
B65M 1810
US Classification:
2423481
Abstract:
Apparatus for winding a strip (58) of web into a cartridge (40), the cartridge including an enclosing shell (42, 44); a spool (46) mounted for rotation within the shell, the spool being engageable externally of the cartridge (51, 53) for rotation; the spool comprising a core (54) with features (56) for attaching an end (60) of the strip to the core; an axially extended opening (50) through the shell for advancing or withdrawing the strip; and a light-shielding door (52). A shuttle mechanism (86) has a vacuum head (88) which grips the strip and moves the end to a position for engagement by a tool (94) positioned outside the opening, after which the tool inserts the end into the cartridge and attaches it to the core. A winding motor (354) rotates the spool to draw the strip into the cartridge. During the winding, a rotatable air bar (92) adjusts the path of the strip to prevent contact with the peripheral edges or walls of the opening.

Abstract:
Apparatus for cutting and moving a leading end of a web, including a frame (70, 186); a crank (188) mounted for rotation on the frame; an upper platen (210); a pair of linear guides (212) for the upper platen; a first crank arm (196) connected between the upper platen and the crank; a lower platen; second and third crank arms (218, 220) connected between the lower platen and the crank; an upper die shoe (262) mounted to the upper platen; a lower die shoe (260) mounted to the lower platen; a pair of linear guides (264) between the die shoes; a slide (96) mounted on the frame; a shuttle arm (98) mounted on the slide for movement between the die shoes; an actuator arm (114) pivotably connected to the shuttle arm; a vacuum head (88) pivotably mounted to the shuttle arm; a cam follower (144, 146) connected to pivot the vacuum head; a cam (148, 158) pivotably mounted to the frame for engaging the cam follower; a link (258) rigidly connected to the cam; a fourth crank arm (252) pivotably connected between the link and the crank; and a drive system (287-304) for rotating the crank and oscillating the drive arm. The shuttle arm is moved back and forth on the slide by the actuator arm and the vacuum head is pivoted by the first link to grip the web as the upper and lower die shoes move toward each other to cut the web, in synchronism with movement of the upper and lower die shoes.
