Abstract:

Reserve power is provided in a portable cellular transceiver comprising a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver by monitoring a power level of a battery of the portable cellular transceiver using a power detection circuit. A comparator circuit determines whether the power level of the battery is greater than a predetermined threshold. Based on the available power level, a power control circuit automatically places the transceiver into at least one low power mode when the power level reaches a corresponding threshold level. The low power mode selectively powers down circuitry of the portable cellular transceiver. The corresponding threshold level reserves power for an emergency telephone call. Power is provided to the circuitry of the portable cellular transceiver when the available power level is greater than the predetermined threshold. The reserve power provides power for the activation of the portable cellular transceiver, establishment of a call between the portable cellular transceiver and a cellular base station, transfer of GPS satellite acquisition aiding information to the portable cellular transceiver, receipt of GPS satellite information, communication of GPS satellite information to the cellular base station, and determination of a position of the portable cellular transceiver.

Abstract:

A control module interconnecting a transmitter portion and a signal receiver portion of a mobile device is provided. The control module monitors the transmitter portion of the mobile device and, based on the monitored condition, alters the mobile device to inhibit the ability of a transmission signal from a transmitter to interfere with the signal receiver portion, i. e. , intelligent blanking. In other words, the control module may disable or modify the signal receiver portion when power on the transmitter portion exceeds a predetermined power threshold level. Alternatively the control module may force the transmitter portion to transmit at a reduced power level.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for combining pressure information from pressure sensors, motion information from dead reckoning or other motion sensors, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and geomagnetic sensors, and temperature information from temperature sensors, to separate a change in altitude from a change in environmental pressure or temperature. A change in measured pressure without any motion or change in temperature must be a weather-related barometric pressure change. If there is an associated temperature change, but no motion, and the rate of change is too fast for a normal weather change, the measured change represents a change in sensitivity of the pressure sensor with temperature, and the sensor calibration can be adjusted. A rapid change in pressure, associated with horizontal motion, but no measurable vertical motion represents a movement into a different pressure environment. Only changes in pressure that are associated with measurable vertical motion are true changes in altitude.

Abstract:

Positioning systems and methods comprise a network of transmitters that broadcast positioning signals comprising ranging signals and positioning system information. A ranging signal comprises information used to measure a distance to a transmitter broadcasting the ranging signal. A reference sensor array comprising at least one reference sensor unit is positioned at a known location. A remote receiver includes an atmospheric sensor collecting atmospheric data at a position of the remote receiver. A positioning application is coupled to the remote receiver and generates a reference pressure estimate at the position of the remote receiver using the atmospheric and reference data from the reference sensor array. The positioning application computes the position of the remote receiver using the reference pressure estimate and information derived from at least one of the positioning signals and satellite signals that are signals of a satellite-based positioning system. The position includes an elevation.
