Abstract:
A prosthesis for repairing a knee is made with an insert sandwiched between a femoral component and a tibial tray. The parts are shaped so that both the femoral component and the tibial tray will slidingly interface with the insert during motion of the knee. At regions where the femoral component interfaces with the insert during extension and during an initial range of flexion of the knee, the femoral component's radius of curvature (R) for flexion rotation is larger than its radius of curvature (R) for varus/valgus rotation. In a preferred embodiment, the surface of the tibial tray is convex and spherically curved, and the insert is free to move in both the posterior-anterior direction and the medial-lateral direction with respect to the tibial tray.

Abstract:
The invention provides a medical or veterinary procedure review system comprising an application to perform a nonstandard procedure on a patient, a computer for receiving the application, a program to forward the application to a reviewer, storage of a review together with the application, and a record of the review process for consideration by a third party. In another aspect the invention provides a system for auditing the application review process to assume compliance with established guidelines.

Abstract:
A prosthetic joint according to the present invention includes a first implant component for attachment to a first bone and a second implant component for attachment to a second bone. The first implant component has a condylar portion that includes first and second condylar bearing surfaces and similarly, the second implant component has bearing surfaces that receive and are complementary to the first and second condylar bearing surfaces. Each of the first and second condylar bearing surfaces and each of the bearing surfaces of the second implant component has a cross-section in a coronal plane that exhibits two different radii and a contact point is established between the first and second condylar bearing surfaces and the bearing surfaces of the second implant component. The bearing surfaces of the respective implant components are configured such that varus and valgus rotation of the first implant component relative to the second implant component causes the contact point to move outwardly.

Abstract:
A knee joint prosthesis includes a femoral component having a first condylar bearing surface and a second condylar bearing surface. Each of the first and second condylar bearing surfaces has a cross-section in a coronal plane that exhibits at least two different radii. The prosthesis also includes a tibial component and an insert component associated with the tibial component. The insert component has bearing surfaces that are complementary to the first and second condylar bearing surfaces, wherein a contact point is established between the bearing surfaces of the insert component and the first and second condylar bearing surface. In accordance with the present invention and as a result of the above construction, varus and valgus rotation of the femoral component relative to the insert component causes the contact point to move laterally as the knee is rotated. By shifting the contact pointy laterally/outwardly, the knee stability (i.e., stiffness) gradually increased.

Abstract:
A prosthesis for replacement of the first metatarsal-phalangeal articulation comprises a metatarsal component and a phalangeal component. The metatarsal component has a convex articulating surface and concave distal aspect, the metatarsal articulating surface being curved so as to approximate the natural articular surface of the first metatarsal bone and furthermore to articulate smoothly with the phalangeal articulating surface of the phalangeal component. The phalangeal component comprises a base member and an insert, the base member having a distal aspect adapted to engage and be secured to a resected end of the phalanx bone and also having a proximal aspect adapted to receive and have permanently attached thereto the insert. The insert, which includes the phalangeal articulating surface, is made available in various distal-proximal thicknesses, and an appropriately sized insert is selected during implantation so as to cause the tension in the natural soft tissue surrounding the prosthesis after implantation to approximate the tension of the soft tissue of the natural metatarsal-phalangeal articulation.

Abstract:
A bone prosthesis for the leg and thigh comprises a distal femoral component that includes a body portion adapted to replace a resected portion of the distal femur and a condylar portion having a spherical surface along its inferior and posterior aspects and an axle hole extending through it in the latero-medial direction at the geometric center of the sperical surface and a proximal tibial component that includes a metal head portion having a cavity opening superiorly and defined by spaced-apart lateral and medial flange portions, each of which has an axle hole. A plastic tibial plateau insert is received in the cavity of the tibial head portion and has a spherical seat matching, receiving and pivotably supporting the femoral condylar spherical surface. A plastic bushing is received in the axle hole of each tibial flange portion, and a metal axle is received in the femoral and tibial axle holes. Clearances between the bushings and the portions of the axle received in the bushings provide latero-medial flexural and axial rotational laxities in the prosthetic joint throughout the range of flexural motion.
