Abstract:

A microcombustor comprises a microhotplate and a catalyst for sustained combustion on the microscale. The microhotplate has very low heat capacity and thermal conductivity that mitigate large heat losses arising from large surface-to-volume ratios typical of the microdomain. The heated catalyst enables flame ignition and stabilization, permits combustion with lean fuel/air mixtures, extends a hydrocarbons limits of flammability, and lowers the combustion temperature. The reduced operating temperatures enable a longer microcombustor lifetime and the reduced fuel consumption enables smaller fuel supplies, both of which are especially important for portable microsystems applications. The microcombustor can be used for on-chip thermal management and for sensor applications, such as heating of a micro gas chromatography column and for use as a micro flame ionization detector.

Abstract:

A method for catalytically reducing nitrogen oxide compounds (NO, defined as nitric oxide, NO, +nitrogen dioxide, NO) in a gas by a material comprising a base metal consisting essentially of CuO and Mn, and oxides of Mn, on an activated metal hydrous metal oxide support, such as HMO:Si. A promoter, such as tungsten oxide or molybdenum oxide, can be added and has been shown to increase conversion efficiency. This method provides good conversion of NOto N, good selectivity, good durability, resistance to SOaging and low toxicity compared with methods utilizing vanadia-based catalysts.

A material effective for adsorbing NO. sub. x from an exhaust stream of a combustion process, such as from an internal combustion engine operating under lean burn conditions, is disclosed. The material comprises an alkali metal-doped and copper-doped hydrous metal oxide material that has been calcined. The alkali metal is selected from potassium and sodium. The material is coated onto a substrate, such as ceramic beads or pellets, or a honeycomb cordierite monolith, and placed in contact with the exhaust stream.

A system and methods for a vehicle are provided for adjusting each of a speed of a radiator fan and a position of grille shutters of the vehicle responsive to a temperature at a wastegate exceeding a temperature threshold. In one example, a system may include a radiator fan at a front end of a vehicle, an engine coupled to an exhaust passage, a turbine in the exhaust passage having a bypass conduit, a wastegate positioned in the turbine conduit, and the wastegate receiving airflow from downstream of the radiator fan via a cooling duct.
