Two Stage Method For Dynamically Determining Primary Adapter In A Heterogeneous N-Way Adapter Configuration
Brian Eric Bakke - Rochester MN, US Robert Edward Galbraith - Rochester MN, US Brian James King - Rochester MN, US Timothy James Larson - LaCrosse WI, US Timothy Jerry Schimke - Stewartville MN, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
A method and apparatus are provided for dynamically determining a primary adapter in a heterogeneous N-way adapter configuration. Each of the adapters generates information about itself and exchanges the information with all other adapters. First a decision-making adapter is identified. Then the decision-making adapter compares the adapter-generated information of all the adapters and makes a decision determining the primary adapter. The decision-making adapter communicates the decision to all other adapters. The determined primary adapter assumes a role as the primary adapter and the other adapters assume a role as a secondary adapter.
Maintaining Write Cache And Parity Update Footprint Coherency In Multiple Storage Adaptor Configuration

Abstract:
A method, computer program product and computer system for maintaining write cache and parity update footprint coherency in a multiple storage adaptor configuration for storage adaptors in a storage subsystem, which includes providing atomic updating of the storage adaptors and the attached disk drives, enabling runtime addition and runtime subtraction of a storage adaptor in the multiple storage adaptor configuration, and maintaining write cache and parity update footprint coherency using atomic updating, runtime addition and runtime subtraction of a storage adaptor.
Dynamic Optimization Of Device Limits And Thresholds In A Write Cache

Abstract:
A method, computer program product and system for dynamically optimizing the limit and the thresholds of a write cache for a storage adapter connected to storage devices, includes measuring continually an overall locality of data in the write cache for the storage devices, calculating the limit of the write cache dynamically for each storage device using the overall locality and a device-related information, and calculating the threshold of the write cache dynamically for each storage device by combining a fair amount and a device-related additional amount.

Abstract:
Parity Update Footprints (PUFPs) are kept on the disk drives themselves (rather than in nonvolatile RAM) so that the PUFPs will move along with the RAID arrays and data they protect. This permits effective detection of and recovery from many unexpected-power-loss events, and certain other types of failures, even in a clustered-adapter configuration or with a standalone adapter that has no nonvolatile RAM or only a little nonvolatile RAM. Desirably, many Set PUFP and Clear PUFP operations can be coalesced into each write to the block on the disk which contains the PUFPs, thereby improving system performance.

Iimplementing Storage Adapter With Enhanced Flash Backed Dram Management

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION - Armonk NY
International Classification:

US Classification:

Abstract:
A method and controller for implementing enhanced flash backed dynamic random access memory (DRAM) management, and a design structure on which the subject controller circuit resides are provided. An input/output adapter (IOA) includes at least one super capacitor, a data store (DS) dynamic random access memory (DRAM), a flash memory, a non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM), and a flash backed DRAM controller. Responsive to an adapter reset, Data Store DRAM testing including restoring a DRAM image from Flash to DRAM and testing of DRAM is performed. Mirroring of RAID configuration data and RAID parity update footprints between the NVRAM and DRAM is performed. Save of DRAM contents to the flash memory is controllably enabled when super capacitors have been sufficiently recharged and the flash memory erased.

Abstract:
A method for optimizing locations of physical data accessed by one or more client applications interacting with a storage system, with the storage system comprising at least two redundancy groups having physical memory spaces and data bands. Each of the data bands corresponds to physical data stored on several of the physical memory spaces. A virtualized logical address space includes client data addresses utilizable by the one or more client applications. A storage controller is configured to map the client data addresses onto the data bands, such that a mapping is obtained, wherein the one or more client applications can access physical data corresponding to the data bands.
