Abstract:

The invention provides a system that includes: a web server, an application server, and a data server all connected to each other. The system is intended to protect web based applications. A web server receives a request and transmits it as a message to the application server. When the application server receives the request, the application server extracts attributes of this request. The application server uses an authorization engine to determine if each attribute of the request is authorized by accessing the data server to compare each attribute of the request with at least one rule from a rules store. The rules store resides on the data server. If the attributes of the request meet the rules in the rules store, then the request is executed by the application server.

Abstract:

An adaptive image acquisition system employing a hand-held optical scanner or camera is disclosed. The system includes an adaptive camera exposure control system to adjust the camera exposure time to the media's reflectivity characteristics. The system assembles a "filmstrip" of images from compressed video data, wherein redundant image data appearing in successive image frames has been removed. The system employs a correlation process between successive frames to identify the redundant frame information and determined the camera velocity. By adapting the correlation process to the velocity of the camera, the effects of variations in the velocity may be substantially eliminated.

Abstract:

Trihalomethanes (THM's) in water, particularly in drinking water, are substantially reduced by treatment of the water with small amounts, i. e. , below about 50 ppm, of sulfite ion supplied by sodium metabisulfite or sulfur dioxide. The addition to the water of the sodium metabisulfite alters the structure of the THM's precursor and lowering the chlorine demand. The sulfite ion may be introduced prior to chlorination, or at an intermediate stage of the chlorination, or in adjunct with the chlorination which permits the use of substantially reduced amounts of chlorination.
