Abstract:

A high-speed, directly modulated ridge waveguide laser includes: a ridge structure at a junction surface of the laser chip; and a plurality of pads only on non-active areas of the junction surface, where the plurality of pads protrude beyond an edge of the ridge structure. The laser chip can thus be held by a manufacturing tool, such that the manufacturing tool abuts the pads without abutting the ridge structure. In this manner, the ridge structure of the laser is protected from damage due to contacts by manufacturing tools, increasing the device yield of a wafer. By providing the pads only on the non-active areas of the junction surface, parasitic capacitance for contacts in the active areas can be properly controlled.

Apparatus and methods for managing, manipulating and presenting data objects within a graphical user interface with variable dimensions, shapes, locations and interactions. The apparatus and methods allow for variable data objects to be both pinned and liquid depending on a larger management and manipulation apparatus. The apparatus consists of databases that store the data objects to be displayed within the user interface and the layout coordinates, variable potential object size, and whether the object can move or not based on the graphical user interface dimensions. The object manipulations include the representation of such objects on the graphical user interface in a defined sequence.

Abstract:

A storage controller receives a command to delete a dataset stored in a first set of storage volumes controlled by the storage controller. In response to receiving the command, a determination is made as to whether an indicator has been enabled to protect the dataset against an accidental deletion. In response to determining that the indicator has been enabled, the dataset is copied from the first set of storage volumes to a second set of storage volumes controlled by the storage controller. In response to completion of the copying of the dataset from the first set of storage volumes to the second set of storage volumes, the command to delete the dataset stored in the first set of storage volumes is executed.

Abstract:

A computer-implemented method according to one embodiment includes receiving a request to initialize a storage device, the request including a volume serial number associated with the storage device, identifying a size of the storage device, where the size is indicated within the request, determining a size of a table of contents and a location for the table of contents within the storage device, based on the identified size of the storage device, selecting a type of the table of contents from a plurality of different types, based on the identified size of the storage device, and automatically initializing the storage device, including creating the table of contents, reserving a physical area of the storage device for the table of contents using a physical extent, and inserting the table of contents into the storage device, where the table of contents has the determined size of the table of contents, the determined location for the table of contents, and the selected type of the table of contents.
