Abstract:

Method and apparatus is described herein for accommodating two types of hard disks, for example, SCSI disks and FC-AL disks, using a single, dual-purpose backplane. The dual-purpose backplane includes a plurality of drive bays each including a first connector for receiving a complementary connector of an SCSI disk and a second connector for receiving a complementary connector of an FC-AL disk. In a computer system, one or the other of the first and second connectors is mounted upside down to avoid overlapping and structural interference with connection of other hard disks to the backplane. In an external storage system, hard disks are inserted sideways, and thus one connector type is mounted on the backplane in an orientation rotated 180 degrees from the other connector type.

Abstract:

A system and method for indicating the availability of a controller channel are disclosed. A system incorporating teachings of the present disclosure may include a controller operable to manage an array of data storage devices. The devices may include, for example, disk drives with both read and write functionality. Preferably, the controller will have at least one channel, which may have both an internal and an external connector. The system may also include an indicator operable to indicate when a data storage device is attached to an internal connector of a given channel. As such, employing teachings of the present disclosure may allow a user to accurately and expeditiously determine whether a given controller channel is available.

Abstract:

A virtual disk subsystem and method for providing a virtual local drive are disclosed. The virtual disk subsystem includes a channel bridge, such as an Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) bridge, that receives disk commands from a disk controller, as well as a disk emulator in communication with the channel bridge and a network interface. The disk emulator includes control logic that receives disk commands from the disk controller via the channel bridge and, in response, retrieves data from a remote data storage device and forwards the data to the disk controller, such that the disk controller perceives the remote data storage device as a local device. In an exemplary embodiment, the virtual disk subsystem allows a standard operating system (OS) in a data processing system to function as if the data processing system included the emulated drive.

Abstract:

A method and system are provided for formatting documents for printing in a selected format and resolution upon determination that the software program generating the print job is incapable of creating a document in the selected layout and at the selected resolution. The process of formatting the document involves causing the software program to generate a print job at a resolution lower than that selected by the user. A method, apparatus, and computer implemented instructions for managing a set of memory resources used to store texture objects in a data processing system. A texture manager allocates memory to a current texture object in a set of memory resources. A stored texture object, handled by the texture manager, is selectively removed in response to an inability to allocate sufficient memory to the current texture object. The allocating and selectively removing steps are repeated until the current texture object is allocated sufficient memory. The repeating step is halted in response to an absence of any stored texture objects, handled by a texture manager, being present in the first memory resource. Stored texture objects, handled by another texture manager, are selectively removed in response to an inability to allocate sufficient memory to the current texture object. Memory is allocated in the set of memory resources to the current texture object in response to selectively removing stored texture objects.

Abstract:

A file locking method and implementation are disclosed which allows a plurality of user sessions to open and read a file, but at any one time, only one session will be allowed to change the data displayed in the browser window and to update the file. This file locking method sets up a file access priority by using file locks that are date-time stamped and session stamped. The types of lock associated with the present invention include read lock, authority lock, write lock, and folder lock. When a session/user requests access to a file, the application will check a lock table associated with the requested file. For each lock on the file, there is an entry in the lock table for each of the attributes of the lock: lock type, session owner, date-time stamp. Depending on the lock and the existing locks on the file, the requesting session may be granted a lock. After the access request is fulfilled, the file lock may be removed.
