Abstract:

The present invention provides the means to encage the rear cargo area of a hatch back automobile with a freestanding cage that attaches to the vehicle to at cargo tie down points manufactured into the vehicle to provide security for the cargo area even with the rear seat laid forward and the hatch open. The cage is comprised of a pair of horizontal floor frames (), a forward frame () that runs parallel to the rear seat (), a horizontal top frame () that is formed to the shape of the cargo compartment and is hinged in the center () parallel to the fender walls () so it may be folded in half to ease assembly and storage, and a pair or rear frames () that run parallel to the hatch () and span the length of the hatch opening when joined together by a locking mechanism (). The rear frames () are hinged () at the opposite ends of the locking mechanism (). The forward frame () and rear frames attaches () to the floor frames () and the upper frame () by means of clasps () that can only be accessed from within the cage. The upper frame (), forward frame (), and rear frames () are covered with a grating material (). The cage attaches to the floor of the cargo area at cargo tie down points () manufactured into the vehicle by means of clasps or tabs () providing a free standing cage that is secured to the vehicle and cannot be easily removed or opened by unauthorized persons even with the hatch open and the rear seat folded forward. This has the added advantage of allowing the rear seat to be laid forward for the purpose of carrying more cargo while maintaining a secure cargo area.
