Abstract:
A sub-miniature fuse for electrical protection includes an assembly of an outer tube and an inner tube made of insulating material. The inner tube has electrodes and a fusible metal link sputtered onto its outer surface. The assembly of inner and outer tubes is terminated electrically at its ends with axial leads, or with surface mounting pads, or with radial leads.

The assembly of inner and outer tubes is terminated electrically at its ends with axial leads, or with surface mounting pads, or with radial leads.
An electrical component, particularly a fuse for a surface-mount component, is formed by sputtering an aluminum conductor onto a square tube, sleeving the tube into an outer tube, filling the assembly with a room-temperature vulcanizing silicone sealant, cutting the assembly into segments, and metallizing the ends of each segment. In one embodiment, the sleeved tubes are mechanically separated from the surrounding silicone. In another embodiment, the silicone-coated tubes are mechanically separated from the outer tubes. In another embodiment fuses are made by sputtering the conductors onto a thin glass substrate, covering a link portion of the conductors with silicone adhesive, and dicing the substrate.

Abstract:
A method and device for making high precision glass forms (). A glass rod () is pushed into a melting tube () and the glass form is pulled from the chamber. Preferably, both the push rate and the pull rate are controlled. Fiber optic glass ferrules and other components manufactured by the use of this invention have precision dimensions that fall well within the tight dimensional tolerances required for ferrules and others.
