Abstract:

It has unexpectedly been found that the combination of (1) an alkylated diphenylamine, (2) a sulfurized olefin/fatty oil and/or an ashless dialkyldithiocarbamate, and (3) an alkylated phenothiazine, is highly effective at controlling crankcase lubricant oxidation and deposit formation. The present invention includes lubricating compositions, lubricating additives, and methods for improving the antioxidancy and/or deposit formation properties of a lubricating composition.

The invention relates to an improved process for producing organomolybdenum compositions with high molybdenum content that are highly useful as lubricant additives, in which the process involves reacting a fatty oil with a diamine, followed by reaction with a molybdenum source. The process of the present invention does not require a volatile organic solvent to promote molybdenum incorporation and produces an organomolybdenum composition having a high molybdenum content. In addition, the process can be conducted in the absence of sulfur and phosphorus-containing reactants.

The invention relates to a lubricating oil composition having improved antioxidant properties, and which contains a molybdenum compound and an alkylated phenothiazine. Further, it may also include a secondary diarylamine, preferably an alkylated diphenylamine. This combination of additives provides improved oxidation control and friction modifier performance to the lubricating oil. The composition is particularly suited for use as a crankcase lubricant, or a transmission lubricant, including low levels and zero levels of phosphorus.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for delivering molybdenum from a lubricant source into a fuel combustion system or to the exhaust therefrom. By the present invention, molybdenum from the lubricant or the fuel will interact with phosphorus, sulfur, and/or lead from the combustion products. In this manner, the molybdenum scavenges or inactivates harmful materials which have migrated into the fuel or combustion products, and which can otherwise poison catalytic converters, sensors and/or automotive on-board diagnostic devices. The present invention can also lead to improved durability of exhaust after treatment systems.
