Abstract:

A forced flow of cooling air through a computer housing is created during operation of a specially designed data storage disc drive structure operatively disposed in the housing. The drive, which is illustratively a CD ROM drive, has a bladed carrying structure which supports a compact disc and is rotationally driven with the supported disc. Driven rotation of the bladed carrying structure creates the forced flow of cooling air within the housing without requiring additional space for a separate cooling fan therein. In two illustrated embodiments of the bladed carrying structure the created cooling air flow is generally parallel to the rotational axis of the compact disc, and in a third embodiment of the bladed carrying structure the created cooling air flow is generally transverse to the rotational axis.

Abstract:

A computer system supports a fast hibernation operation to save power, while minimizing the amount of time it takes to enter the hibernation mode, and to resume normal operations. The system periodically stores data from system memory to non-volatile memory, such as a hard disk drive, during normal operations when the system is idle. The system includes activity monitors that detect when the data in memory pages is changed. The system periodically sweeps the monitors, and performs save operations to the non-volatile memory. When the system enters hibernation mode, the system determines which memory pages have been changed since the last save operation, and then saves those pages to memory. As an alternative, the system immediately can enter hibernation by supplying power to the memory pages that have not been saved since the last save operation. To implement this, independent switches under the control of the CPU of memory controller selectively turn off power to unsaved memory pages. The system can also implement a fast resume procedure by restoring the memory pages that have the highest priority, and saving the other pages in the background, or as need by the system devices.

Abstract:

A technique for automatically updating software, including but not limited to application programs, residing on, e. g. , a client computer. Specifically, an update script is stored on a network server for each software product to be updated and, where appropriate, for each different country or locale in which that product will be installed. At a scheduled time, the client computer automatically, through an executing updating application: establishes a network connection to the server; constructs a file name for a file containing an appropriate update script; and then downloads that file from the server. The script contains appropriate update information, including whether the update is to occur through a web site or through the script, and if the latter, listings of operating system (O/S) specific and O/S-independent product update files. For a script-based update, the updating application downloads those update files, as specified by the script, corresponding to the executing O/S and then, in a sequence specified in the script, executes various files therein to complete the update. Once the update successfully concludes, the updating application appropriately updates the locally stored version number of the installed software and schedules the next update accordingly.
